Dear Tony
Chris Mayne of the BFRC (in his letter to Glazine 19th June) reminds us that several factors affect a spacer’s thermal performance. It is not just thermal conductivity. Crucially, performance needs to last. A spacer bar’s porosity – the degree to which it lets moisture in and gas out of the sealed unit – underpins thermal performance.

The Office for Fair Trading has referred the merger of Latium Holdings and The Epwin Group to the Competition Commission for investigation amid concerns it could lead to price hikes. As previously reported in The Glazine, the businesses merged in January in a deal that created a £275m-turnover enterprise with 2,500 staff.
The OFT said in February it would look at the deal to see if it would result in a substantial lessening of competition in the roofing products sector. Now the OFT has decided to refer the deal for further investigation by the Commission.

31 years and still going strong
When Rehau launched its 50th anniversary competition to find the oldest working installation of Rehau windows or doors earlier this year, it was confident that it would find an installation which was at least 25 years old, in line with the date when its Blaenau factory first began extruding profile in the UK.
However, the response to the competition surprised even Rehau with many entries much older than that and several coming from the early 1980s when REHAU in the UK was still importing profile from Germany.

Listers and Roto teaching old dogs new tricks
