EXPRESSIONS OF INTEREST

Specialist Synseal fabricator and installer, Expressions (Grimsby), recently completed a residential project in Humberside that required old Crittall steel domestic windows set in timber surrounds to be replaced by bespoke PVC-U ones.
Expressions worked closely with the homeowner to deliver a fenestration solution that was in keeping with the original style of the property, while delivering the highest levels of performance in use with excellent thermal benefits.
Paul Fenty, Expressions’ chairman, explained that his company was approached for advice because the original timber outer frames and Crittall steel-framed inserts would require a bespoke solution to replace them. “We decided the best approach would be to create a prototype window using a door outer frame and dummy sashes in all apertures, to show the homeowner what we can do,” he said. “We also soldered and oxidised all the lead to make it look just like the original.” The result, he said, was strikingly similar to the windows that were replaced.
The glass units, also manufactured by Expressions, were made using Pilkington Optiwhite low-iron glass and Swisspacer V spacerbar. Two teams of two fitters completed three phases at the property between November 2011 and January 2012. Expressions (Grimsby) also had its experienced joiners complete the internal makeup, because the home is fitted out with period timber panelling.
“We know we weren’t the cheapest option, but we were able to give the homeowner exactly what they wanted using PVC-U profile – and they were absolutely delighted with the result,” Paul said.
“It is a common, false, assumption that replacing period windows with PCV-U equivalents will damage the property’s heritage,” Paul explained. “We are a specialist window firm that works with all types of profile material to achieve the best results. It is all down to the design – if we had put in standard PVC-U casement windows (which would look terrific in many later properties) they would have had a damaging effect on a 1910 period building like this one.
“However, we worked closely with the homeowner to deliver results that people wouldn’t notice because they were the most suitable. In this instance, 70mm Synseal PVC-U profile worked a treat. Thankfully, we have exceptional service from Synseal – something we’ve had for the last 20 years!”
Synseal’s Fabrication Development Manager, Brian Walker, explained how companies like Expressions are redefining the public image of PVC-U. “Whether or not windows look out of place is down to their design, not the material they are made from,” he said. “Expressions has proved beyond doubt that while cost is a consideration, homeowners understand the importance of design and suitability, and will specify accordingly.”
