Avocet buyer on the horizon?

A quick scan through the new products section of this week’s Glazine will show what has been on people’s mind this week, as hardware companies vie for the potential market opened up by the possible collapse of Avocet.

Everything is still hanging in the balance, as the administrators continue in their search for a buyer. The managing director of administrator Duff & Phelps told me that there is nothing new to report, continuing the period of uncertainty for Avocet’s employees.

Veka

However, I understand that there are a few companies sniffing around the hardware distributer – after all, the business could offer a lot to the right investor, including a very strong brand.

Avocet worked tirelessly on improving its image following the MBO in 2007, which resulted in the development of the ABS cylinder. ABS then went on the PR offensive, winning an endorsement from the chief constable of the West Yorkshire Police Force in the process.

In a recent discussion on LinkedIn, it was noted that such is the support by the police of ABS, that if the cylinders were withdrawn from the market, then replacement products from different companies could be seen as inferior.

ABS managing director Steve Stewart has written numerous letters on the subject of security in this ezine, which spawned debates that could last for weeks – it wasn’t always clear whether there was enough material for the continuing arguments, but they managed to keep ABS at the front of people’s minds at a time when security remains a concern for homeowners who are frightened by stories of lock-bumping and snapping.

A value of £220m has been put on the hardware industry in this country – something worth going after for the right company, and I imagine that companies outside the sector are showing the most interest in Avocet, especially since most of the marketing work has already been done.

On a ‘brighter’ note, it appears that energy efficient windows are melting cars in California. It probably wouldn’t happen in this country – once the sun broke through the cloud cover, then any energy would probably be absorbed by net curtains.

Long-term recovery

Projections from CITB-ConstructionSkills that 2012 will be another tough year for the Scottish construction sector come as no surprise but are still a cause for concern. Longer term the industry is expected to recover – albeit slowly – but the damage caused by the current downturn risks being felt for many years to come.
