Industry growth looks set to continue through to 2018

Well, now we have it. After a continuous welter of building, construction and economic forecasts, we now have our very own Robert Palmer, director of Palmer Market Research, the original fenestration industry crystal ball gazer, lifting all our spirits with the statement that: “We’re entering the longest period of prolonged growth for this market since the nineties”. He goes on to tell us the market dramatically switched to growth in the second quarter of 2013, after a period of continuous decline ending up for the year nearly 5% higher at £3.78 billion. Great news, indeed

The Palmer Window, Door and Conservatory Markets in Housing in Great Britain, 2014 edition, was developed by carrying out structured interviews with 674 companies operating in the market, including house builders, manufacturers, and housing associations, between April and June 2014. You can read the full story here.

A report that concentrates on the PVCu end of the market is also available from D&G Consulting. You can read about it here

We also hear that the UK economy grew slightly (here) and that house prices dropped for the first time in 17 months (here). As well as, news from Kommerling, Swish, and VEKA.

I hope you enjoy this week’s issue.

This Week's News

All Clear for Growth in the Domestic Glazing Market

Growing consumer confidence, a burgeoning housing market and a low interest rate environment helped boost the domestic glazing market in Great Britain in 2013. And growth looks set to continue through to 2018. “We’re entering the longest period of prolonged growth for this market since the nineties” says Robert Palmer, director of Palmer Market Research.

After continuing to decline in the first quarter of 2013, the market dramatically switched to growth in the second quarter, ending up for the year nearly 5% higher at £3.78 billion. By sector, the market in new build housing shot up 17% and in home improvements by a more modest 4%. Only social housing refurbishment failed to see an increase, down just over 2%.

Government initiatives, in particular the Help to Buy scheme, have had an important effect on new build and will continue to do so through to 2018 and even beyond. Rising interest rates will be something of a dampener but even so by 2018 the market is forecast to be 50% bigger than it was in 2013.

The strengthening housing market itself is also helping home improvements as homeowners feel that these are now worth making again. The higher number of housing transactions boosted the replacement market which saw growth for the first time in ten years. Overall the home improvement market will grow by nearly a fifth between 2013 and 2018.

More negatively, funding issues after the winding down of the Decent Homes Programme will mean little or no growth in social housing refurbishment over the period to 2018.

UK economy grew 0.9% in second quarter, says ONS

UK economic growth has been revised up to 0.9% for the second quarter of the year by the Office for National Statistics (ONS), compared with a previous estimate of 0.8%.
UK GDP was 3.2% higher in the second quarter compared with a year earlier.

Revised ONS figures also show the UK economy surpassed its pre-recession peak in the third quarter of 2013.

Previously, this was thought to have been achieved in the second quarter of 2014.

Labour’s “war on cold homes” step in right direction

Labour’s announcement that it would provide interest free loans for energy efficiency work to one million households is a welcome step to address the failures of the Green Deal, according to the Federation of Master Builders (FMB).

Brian Berry, Chief Executive of the FMB, said: “Our housing stock is amongst the oldest and least energy efficient in Europe and Labour recognises the urgent need to retrofit our existing homes. If we cannot tackle this problem, we will not halt the rise in fuel poverty and we will not meet our 80% carbon reduction targets by 2050.

Berry continued: “The Green Deal, as it currently stands, has little financial appeal to most households, precisely because of the interest rates charged. The package of measures announced by Labour yesterday, including focusing ECO funding on low income homes and bringing the private rented sector up to scratch, are good first steps towards making energy efficiency a national infrastructure priority.”

100 Approved Installers in just a few months

Since it was unveiled at this year's FIT Show, The VEKA UK Group's Approved Installer initiative has already welcomed over 100 members onto its books.

The key aim of the scheme is to assist installers with selling VEKA and Halo products and there are a whole host of tools to assist them. These include valuable sales leads from a dedicated consumer-facing website and access to exclusive, professionally-designed marketing materials. Add into this that it’s free of charge to become an Approved Installer and it's easy to see why the uptake has been so immediate!

In addition to the first 100 Approved Installers, there are also around 40 Approved Fabricators who are now eligible to approve their installer customers. Amy Grundy, National Sales Manager for the Approved Installer scheme, is thrilled by the positive reaction it has received from the outset:

“To have hit the milestone of 100 Approved Installers, eager to show their commitment to using high-spec VEKA and Halo products, is a great result for the scheme – particularly this early in its history. I've seen the initial buzz that surrounded our launch at the FIT Show develop into ever-growing numbers of companies, keen to become Approved Installers and benefit from the support available.”

New Market Intelligence

The window and roofline industries have finally started to see an increase in demand, but the companies that are really hitting the ground running are those that know the markets inside out and know what is coming next. D&G Consulting is pleased to announce the launch of its most up to date market reports.

David Amos, Principal of D&G comments: “We can’t quite offer companies a crystal ball but we can give them the next best thing. Our annual PVC Window, Door and Conservatory Report and Roofline Report are now available and include the very latest reliable information on the current health of the market and perhaps more importantly the forecasts for the future, including key growth areas. Both reports help company Directors of systems companies, fabrication companies, roofline, hardware, glass and component suppliers at all levels of the supply chain to identify real business opportunities and how to make the most of them.

A Lead-Free Decade

Over the last decade Kömmerling’s parent company, profine Group, have saved 68,000 tonnes of lead, thanks to the use of their innovative calcium-zinc based Greenline compound.

During this period, the Group has processed well over 2million tonnes of Greenline compound and they have been instrumental in the drive to remove lead from PVCu compounds in the building sector. While many other systems companies have been slow to react due to technical and commercial reasons, profine have taken a leading stance in this environmental initiative, that’s also supported by VinylPlus, a sustainability programme of the European PVC industry.

More specifically VinylPlus is built around five ambitious commitments including the responsible use of additives by moving towards the replacement of lead stabilisers by 2015, reviewing the use of other additives and moving towards the best possible sustainable additive systems. In an age where lead has been removed from petrol, paint and children’s toys, several decades ago, the PVC industry in general has been a little slow to follow suit.

UK house prices fall for first time in 17 months, says Nationwide

House prices fell by 0.2% in September, according to Nationwide, the first decline it has recorded since April 2013.
Britain’s biggest building society said almost £1,000 was knocked of the value of a typical UK home as a result of the fall, which followed 16 consecutive monthly price rises and provides the latest evidence that the housing market is cooling.

However, Nationwide said the figures disguised wide regional variations, with average prices in London reaching a record high of £401,000, taking them 31% above their 2007 peak.
Nationwide said this was the first time prices had fallen on a monthly basis since April 2013, when they fell by 0.1%. As a result, the rate of annual house price growth fell from 11% to 9.4%.

Robert Gardner, Nationwide’s chief economist, said that while house price growth slowed in September, the picture on a quarterly basis was still relatively strong, with all 13 UK regions recording annual price gains.
