A LEAD-FREE DECADE
30th September 2014

Over the last decade Kömmerling’s parent company, profine Group, have saved 68,000 tonnes of lead, thanks to the use of their innovative calcium-zinc based Greenline compound.

During this period, the Group has processed well over 2million tonnes of Greenline compound and they have been instrumental in the drive to remove lead from PVCu compounds in the building sector. While many other systems companies have been slow to react due to technical and commercial reasons, profine have taken a leading stance in this environmental initiative, that’s also supported by VinylPlus, a sustainability programme of the European PVC industry.

More specifically VinylPlus is built around five ambitious commitments including the responsible use of additives by moving towards the replacement of lead stabilisers by 2015, reviewing the use of other additives and moving towards the best possible sustainable additive systems. In an age where lead has been removed from petrol, paint and children’s toys, several decades ago, the PVC industry in general has been a little slow to follow suit.

Stefan Seidel, managing director of profine UK comments: ‘This is an impressive statistic and to put it into reality, 68,000 tonnes is more than the weight of a typical medium sized commercial airliner. Our material research is as important as our product development programmes, including our Kömmerling brand in the UK as we further cement our reputation as the market leaders in research and development for the PVCu window industry.’
