This Week's News

Public support doubled for new homes to tackle housing crisis

More than half the population are now in favour of house building in their area to ease Britain’s urgent need for new homes – nearly double the proportion surveyed just a year ago.

The dramatic increase, revealed in the recent British Social Attitudes Survey, has led the Federation of Master Builders (FMB) to reply that this shift in attitude must now be addressed by delivering of the homes people want.

The survey findings reveal that the number of people saying that they oppose new house building in their area has fallen from 46% in 2010 to 21% in 2014, and those supportive of new homes in their area has risen from 29% to 56% over the same period.

FMB Chief Executive Brian Berry said of the findings: “These shifts in public opinion suggest that recognition of the need for more new homes has risen significantly and continues to rise.

Disappointment as woodworkers’ merger talks collapse

The British Woodworking Federation (BWF) has confirmed that merger talks with the Timber Trade Federation (TTF) have been suspended after the failure to agree on ‘fundamental issues.’

BWF President David Pattenden has issued a statement to its 700 member firms explaining the BWF still believed in the principles behind the proposal to create a strong industry body to lobby on timber issues. However, ultimately the proposals put forward could not meet the agenda of the two organisations in a realistic timeframe.

BWF chief executive Iain McIlwee added:

“Obviously, we are disappointed. The prize of a joined up voice for timber is great. But it cannot be at any cost. Serving the day-to-day needs of the members is our first and unwavering responsibility. A modern trade body must harness the industry’s expertise and energy, and this is where any activity must start, a bottom-up approach that is member-led.

Don’t sell ‘A-rated glass,’ warns BFRC – or risk £5,000 fine

There is no such thing as ‘A-rated glass’ – so don’t advertise it. That is the warning from the ratings body, the BFRC, which says claims such as ‘A-rated glass as standard’ could lead to a fine of up to £5,000.

“There is no scheme in the UK that rates glass in isolation,” explained BFRC technical director Dr Gary Morgan.  “All WER schemes operate in an identical way - rating the whole window including glass, frames, spacer bars and gaskets.  It is not possible under current European Regulations to provide an energy rating for glass in isolation from the other window components.

“While it is true that certain glazing specifications are widely used in ‘A’ and ‘A+’ rated windows, the glazing itself does not guarantee an ‘A’ or ‘A+’ rating for the whole window.  The frame system also has to be thermally efficient to enable the complete window to obtain a favourable rating.

“Claims such as ‘A-rated glass’ obviously designed to give the impression that the window itself is ‘A’ or ‘A+’ rated, which is misleading.”

GM Football Fives goes live

GM Fundraising has launched yet another major industry event – GM Football Fives, a national five a side football competition, to be held on Saturday 9th May 2015, at St Andrews, the home of Championship side Birmingham City Football Club.

Adrian Barraclough, Quickslide’s Chairman and GM Fundraising team member said: “Unlike some corporate days, the GM Football Fives gives companies an excellent opportunity to put a team together with people from any area of the business. From fitter to Chief Executive, teams will be playing for their company in a national competition that’s all about the UK’s national sport. Company’s customers are also welcome to join a team.”

Each team will consist of eight players and have a guaranteed three matches under the watchful eye of fully qualified referees for just £800 per team. In the same year the glazing industry voted ERA as Component Supplier of the Year at the G Awards, ERA has also been awarded Investors in People accreditation, confirming its dual-commitment to its customers and its people.
