Jobs boost through Get Britain Building 2020 campaign

The Get Britain Building 2020 Plan was launched in London yesterday. It aims to see a further 200,000 jobs created through more house building and infrastructure projects, and includes a range of recommendations for the next Government, covering the period 2015 to 2020. This obviously would drill down and be of huge benefit to the broader fenestration industry, and is an initiative welcomed here at The Glazine.

With the construction industry heavyweight associations getting behind this drive – The Modern Masonry Alliance, Federation of Master Builders, Home Builders Federation and Builders Merchants Federation who represent the major players in the construction and housing industry from the manufacturers of bricks and blocks, to the suppliers of building materials, right through to both the large and small builders - it would be good to see the GGF adding their considerable influence to the campaign. You can read more here.

Elsewhere in this week’s issue we have news of the acquisition by Deceuninck of the Turkish giant Pimapen, which elevates the Belgian window systems supplier to the position of market leader in the premium window sector. Read the full story here.

Edgetech have announced the Top Gun competition to find the fastest Super Spacer applicator in the UK, launched on their stand at the FIT Show 2014. Edgetech’s longest serving technical engineer, Karl Jones holds the record at 34 seconds to make a sealed unit. Read about it here.

Last, but not least, we have more G 14 Awards news, with Purplex joining the list of sponsors for the scheme, and the deadline for entries looming at the end of the week. Remember, you have to be in it to win it.

I hope you enjoy this week’s issue.

Dear Tony

I feel compelled to write in response to the recent communications via your publication between Masterframe and Deceuninck.

Rob McGlennon of Deceuninck writes…..
‘Alan agrees with me that most systems companies’ installer schemes – ‘approved’ or not - are little more than marketing clubs with a ‘badge and brochure’ and few real benefits to the installer. Most seem designed to push the Sysco’s own brand rather than build the installer’s brand. How does that help installers sell’?

Yes this is good point well made, however, brochures and POS material albeit ‘different’ from the competition do not address a far more fundamental issue.

From an installers position the very best sale is from a recommendation. It is recommendations that are the lifeblood of an installers business. Leads are very expensive to generate (even with ‘different’ brochures and POS material), so recommends are essential to build a good reputation and increase revenue. These are only gained if BOTH the installer and supplier get it right first time. Sadly many suppliers think getting a missing part delivered next day (or three days if there is a problem on a Friday) is ok. It is not ok. The costs of not getting it right can be huge.

This is where suppliers fall short. They have no real understanding of the problems created when the products they supply are (for whatever reason) not fit for installation. Additionally there is a wrong perception of who the customer is. The CONSUMER is EVERYONES customer.

This Week's News

Cross-party focus on housing and infrastructure will deliver jobs and growth

Cross-party consensus on how best to deliver new housing and infrastructure projects would result in 200,000 new jobs in the construction sector, according to the industry’s leading organisations.

The call came at the launch of the Get Britain Building 2020 Delivery Plan which makes the case for using construction as a driver of jobs and growth and includes a range of recommendations for the next Government, covering the period 2015 to 2020.

The Modern Masonry Alliance, Federation of Master Builders, Home Builders Federation and Builders Merchants Federation represent the major players in the construction and housing industry from the manufacturers of bricks and blocks, to the suppliers of building materials, right through to both the large and small builders.

Deceuninck becomes No.1 in Europe’s second largest PVC-U window market

Deceuninck last week announced the acquisition of the leading Turkish PVC-U window profile producer, Pimas.

As the pioneer of PVC-U windows in Turkey, Pimas operates under the brand “Pimapen”. Pimapen is the most recognised quality window brand in Turkey and is distributed through a network of 1,200 outlets throughout Turkey, with a major focus on the Istanbul and Ankara area. It is complementary to the existing Deceuninck customer base.

With production near Istanbul, Turkey and in Rostov-on-Don in Russia, Pimas has annual sales of €60 million and employs 484 people. The acquisition is subject to clearance by competition authorities in Turkey and Russia.

The acquisition strengthens Deceuninck’s position as market leader in the premium window sector. Since pioneering PVC-U windows in 1982, Pimapen has become synonymous for PVC-U windows in Turkey and is now the most recognised window brand in the country. With existing brands ‘Egepen/Deceuninck’ and ‘Winsa’, Deceuninck now has the top three premium PVC-U window brands in Turkey. Deceuninck will now have three factories in Turkey: one near Izmir for Egepen-Deceuninck (which will be replaced by a new factory with a significant increase in capacity), and two near Istanbul (Winsa and Pimapen).

Record loan approvals in August

A finance provider to the home improvement and renewables sector managed loan approvals of £10,051,029 in loans for the week commencing 18th August.

Consumer Credit Solutions’ Managing Partner Andy Wallace said: “It’s a positive sign, as our industry is known to be a very good barometer for the economy as a whole. We’re dealing with home owners who are looking to improve their properties, and the fact they’re spending money on high value purchases is a good indicator that people have more confidence.”

“To achieve this level of approvals is unprecedented, because typically July and August are quieter months. Even though it’s not a true quarter, the upcoming trading period of September, October and November are traditionally the strongest period of the year across the home improvement sector. So given that business is so buoyant in the summer months that makes us extremely confident for the rest of the year and into 2015.”

Searching for a Top Gun

As part of its 25 year celebrations, Edgetech UK, is giving the industry’s Super Spacer applicators their dream shot! A chance to go up against the best at Top Gun, Coventry.

Can you beat Edgetech’s longest serving technical engineer, Karl Jones to be Top Gun? Or is your ego writing cheques your body can’t cash?

Putting quotes from the 1980s film aside, the Top Gun competition to find the fastest Super Spacer applicator in the UK was launched on Edgetech’s stand at the FIT Show 2014. Karl set the benchmark for the competition at just 34 seconds to make a sealed unit.

6 out of 10 consumers want to see a sample window

6 out of 10 consumers want to see a sample window according to the extensive research carried out for Swish Window and Door Systems.

“It’s a lot higher than we expected,” says Jon Skinner, Joint Managing Director for Swish Window and Door Systems. “Anecdotally we’re told that only 20 percent of installers in the industry take samples in with them, so this was much higher than we had been expecting.”

Swish Window and Door Systems worked alongside a research specialist to carry out an extensive programme with a combination of in-depth interviewing, focus groups and high volume research to show trends. Investing in the research is part of our commitment to supporting Swish authorised installers.

Distribution Agreement Delights

Avocet Hardware says its recent distribution deal with Duffells will “delight mobile locksmiths and installers alike”.

The addition of Duffells, one of the UKs leading distributors of locks, as an Avocet distributor, means that minimum orders on its ABS snap-secure locks are no longer required and that any orders placed prior to 6pm will be delivered the very next day. Furthermore, the partnership will lead to free delivery on all orders over £100.

Raymond Pearce, Avocet’s head of sales for its ABS range, said: “No matter how good your product, your marketing or your sales team, everything is reliant on distribution. Good distribution can make a company, while bad distribution will quickly ruin reputations”

“Ever since the Jain family rescued Avocet in 2012 everything has been geared towards returning the company to the pinnacle of the market and cementing its position there.”

Debar hardware the first choice for Kaye Building Supplies

Specialist bi-fold door hardware manufacturer and supplier, Debar has teamed up with Kaye Building Suppliers to push their products through to the commercial sector

KBS extrude and supply an innovative, fully integrated range of facade products for curtain walling, doors, windows and low rise glazing systems for commercial applications and decided to stock Debar product range because of their simplicity and ease of fabrication for their customers.

Derek Hodson, General Manager for KBS commented, “We decided to stock Debar hardware because of its straightforward use of fitting and also how it complements our own extruded system. We take all Debars’ product range with the exception of the track and rollers, but only because we produce our own.”

Derek continues, “In the commercial sector, we can sometimes experience very complex applications and it has been fantastic to have Debar on-hand to offer us sound technical advice and support when we have needed it.”

Cotswold steps up investment programme

Cotswold Architectural Products recently completed the second stage of an ambitious investment programme, by re-vamping its main factory and embarking on a recruitment drive.

The Cheltenham based friction stay supplier recently reported that sales were substantially higher this year when compared to same time last year, in what represented another record breaking period of trading for the company.

Management at the company said that demand for its EZ range of friction stays in the UK; and demand for its heavy duty range abroad is driving the growth.

For its factory re-vamp Cotswold has updated machinery including its EZ-line, increased plant capacity, installed new racking and a new canteen; incorporated a new sustainable LED lighting system and upgraded all corporate wear and footwear.

Builders Finance Fund failing to help small house builders

The Government’s ‘Builders Finance Fund’ is not helping the small house builders it was designed to assist, says the Federation of Master Builders (FMB).

Brian Berry, Chief Executive of the FMB, said: “The Builders Finance Fund was originally trailed in the March Budget as ‘help for smaller builders’, but the 15 unit minimum threshold that has been applied has effectively excluded large numbers of small and micro firms that do not build to this scale. However, analysis of the shortlisted schemes reveals that over half of the schemes consist of more than 50 units which is a far cry from the small sites that the scheme was set up to help. A handful of firms, including some very large companies, are behind a third of the schemes shortlisted.”
