Applications To The Green Deal Home Improvement Fund Close
Due to overwhelming popular demand, the Green Deal Home Improvement Fund is closed for applications with immediate effect.
A surge in applications over the last two days means the allocated budget has now been reached. All applications received prior to the fund closing that satisfy the terms and conditions and meet the eligibility criteria will be honoured at the original rates.
The Green Deal Home Improvement Fund was set up to help households in England and Wales improve the energy efficiency of their homes.
Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for Energy & Climate Change, Amber Rudd, said:
“The Green Deal Home Improvement Fund is a world first and in a short space of time it has proved extremely popular.
“We were always clear there was a budget which is why we encouraged people to act quickly.
“As a result, thousands more families will now benefit from Government help to have warmer homes which use less energy.”
Earlier this week DECC announced changes to the scheme, caused by the hugely positive response since its launch at the beginning of June.

Labour’s ‘Help to Build’ could assist small house builders
The Labour Party’s proposed ‘Help to Build’ scheme, which would provide government guarantees for loans to SME house builders, has been welcomed by the Federation of Master Builders (FMB) as a means to help more small house builders enter the housing market.
Shadow Chief Secretary to the Treasury Chris Leslie MP, and Shadow Housing Minister Emma Reynolds MP, visited FMB member firm Building Associates Ltd at a site in Gillingham today to highlight what the scheme might achieve for small house building firms.
Brian Berry, Chief Executive of the FMB said:
“Small house builders have suffered very badly over recent years. They used to build two thirds of all new homes but they are now building just over a quarter and much of this reduction has happened in the past six years. This has inevitably had an impact on the overall capacity of the industry to build the number of new homes we need. The main barrier to SME house builders building more homes is the difficulty they face accessing finance on viable terms. Until this problem is addressed the large number of small building firms that have diversified away from building homes won’t re-enter the market.”

A Brighter Future For The Construction Industry
The construction industry is feeling good about the future, with more than 80% of respondents in a survey conducted by Construction Enquirer and the Build Show reporting a positive outlook for their business over the next 18 months.
In an encouraging set of results for the industry, the overwhelming majority of respondents felt that business would pick up somewhat over the coming months, with a further 16% expecting conditions to remain the same. Only two per cent of the nearly 2,000 contractors, architects, housebuilders, developers, suppliers and plant hirers responding to the survey felt that business conditions are likely to worsen during this time period.
Of the challenges they do envision facing, the availability of skilled workers was identified as the biggest threat, with 44% of respondents highlighting this as an issue. Just over 47% of the people surveyed thought that clearer routes into the construction industry were needed to tackle this challenge, with a greater emphasis on formal training and qualifications.
A further 28% pointed to the need for increased financial support for businesses in order to provide apprenticeships, while 24% of respondents suggested that a greater focus on hands-on training and work experience was needed.

IGnoring the rules puts IG on ASA's naughty step
After intervention by the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) IG doors has had to withdraw its claim to be the UK’s largest manufacturer of composite doors.
The ASA is the UK's independent watchdog responsible for ensuring ads are legal, decent, honest and truthful. Since 2011 its remit includes advertising on the internet.
Martin Dickie, Door-Stop’s Business Unit Manager, challenged the claim this April in a letter to IG’s Managing Director Mark Pulman, who agreed to retract it. But the claim was repeated in advertising and on the website, so three months later Martin reported the case to the ASA.
The ASA investigated, finding in favour of Door-Stop. IG agreed to ensure every reference was amended to ‘one of the largest manufacturers of composite doors’. IG has now complied without argument – thus escaping formal censure. However it has taken time to correct every instance of the claim in its print and online marketing.

National Associations Sign Up To ARGE EPD's
Following ARGE’s announcement to produce generic Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs), ten national lock and hardware associations have now signed up to ARGE’s scheme.
The programme, which was agreed at the 2013 ARGE Conference as part of its sustainability roadmap, will see the delivery to ARGE members of generic, Pan-European EPDs for hardware products by summer 2015.
In addition to the UK’s Door and Hardware Federation, some of the key national associations in the lock and hardware industry have committed to the programme, including the Fachverband in Germany, UNIQ in France, as well as Spain’s AFACE, Austria’s FMMI and Netherland’s VHS. Italy is the latest nation that has committed to the EPDs, whilst Scandinavian associations are also represented by Finland’s Fin Committee and the SME in Sweden, with Switzerland’s VSSB making up the nine members signed up so far. Other national associations are also close to committing.
EPDs are designed to offer a coherent expression of data throughout the life cycle of a product. Developed to provide environmental data from LCA studies in a common format based on rules known as Product Category Rules.
