IGnoring ad rules puts IG Doors
on naughty step
29th July 2014

After intervention by the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) IG Doors has withdrawn its claim to be the UK’s largest manufacturer of composite doors.

The ASA is the UK's independent watchdog responsible for ensuring ads are legal, decent, honest and truthful. Since 2011 its remit includes advertising on the internet.

Martin Dickie, Door-Stop’s Business Unit Manager, challenged the claim this April in a letter to IG Doors’ Managing Director Mark Pulman, who agreed to retract it. But the claim was repeated in advertising and on two websites, so two months later Martin reported the case to the ASA.

The ASA assessed the complaint, and IG Doors has now ensured every reference was amended to ‘one of the largest manufacturers of composite doors’. IG Doors has taken the time to correct all instances of the claim in its print and online marketing.

Martin Dickie says: “I’m happy to say IG Doors complied without argument. Perhaps they knew all along it was a cheeky claim? Most advertising in the industry is legal, decent, honest and truthful, but we all have a responsibility to act on instances of misuse.” The case details now appear on ASA’s list of cases (http://www.asa.org.uk/Rulings/Adjudications.aspx#2" www.asa.org.uk/Rulings/Adjudications.aspx#2) where the advertiser has ‘agreed to amend or withdraw advertising without the need for a formal investigation.’
