First rise in inflation for 10 months but interest rates hold steady
As expected inflation rose in April for the first time in 10 months, although because the likely primary reason for doing so is based on transport costs over the late Easter holiday, it is unlikely to bring about any rise in interest rates just yet. You can read more here.
We have an update from the GGF on the EU implemented Consumer Rights Directive which comes into force on June 13th, and means that every company has to change their Term and Conditions to fall in line. Read more here

We Have Email
Dear Tony
Roy Frost's letter of 13th May demonstrates much of what is wrong with our industry.
Triple glazing is not a better option, unless there is at least 44mm sealed units, and those marketing it should be telling the truth, not seeking to make money out the situation. The consumer should be properly advised that the "instinctive" feel "that 3 panes are better than 2" is contrary to fact, as I am sure the majority of the industry who carry on their business with honesty and integrity will point out.

Dear Tony
I agree with Justin Furness’ comments in his letter in last week’s Glazine (14.05.14). The industry’s focus is on keeping heat in the home in winter, but just like conservatories we also need to look at how we keep our buildings cool in summer.
According to a report by the Met Office, our summers are getting drier and hotter. The heat wave of 2003, which resulted in 2,000 excess deaths in the UK alone, they say will become the norm by the 2040s across Europe. Our buildings need to adapt to keep the heat out in summer.

This Week's News
UK inflation rises for first time in 10 months in April
Inflation rose in April for the first time in 10 months, but as the increase was partly due to a late Easter holiday, which pushed up transport costs, it was unlikely to alter interest rate expectations.
Official data also showed that growth in house prices eased in March, potentially tempering concerns about a bubble brewing in the property market although some more up-to-date surveys have shown prices picking up again.
The consumer price index rose more than expected to an annual rate of 1.8 percent in April, from 1.6 percent in March, which had been its lowest level in more than four years, the Office for National Statistics ONS said.
It was the first rise in the CPI since June 2013 and above a Reuters poll forecast for inflation of 1.7 percent in April.
Sterling hit a 16-month high against the euro and rose against the dollar before giving up much of its gains as market expectations that the Bank of England will raise interest rates in about a year's time remained largely intact.
The opposition Labour party jumped on Tuesday's figures, saying they showed the government's complacency about the "cost of living" crisis facing many Britons as wage growth has lagged inflation.
Economists however saw little change in price pressures.

All contracts must change
With the incoming Consumer Rights Directive coming into force on 13th June 2014, every Company must change their contract of terms and conditions by 13th June 2014. To help companies cope with the new legislation the Glass and Glazing Federation (GGF) has now published revised Model Terms and Conditions of Contract, plus Guidance on implementation of the EU Consumer Rights Directive for both GGF Members and non-Members.

The EU Consumer Rights Directive (CRD) is being implemented in the UK on the 13th June 2014. This is entirely separate legislation from the Consumer Rights Bill which is now due to be implemented in Summer 2015. The Government signed up to the CRD over three years ago.
The Directive is being implemented via legislation known as The Consumer Contracts (Information, Cancellation and Additional Charges) Regulations 2013. The main issues are:-

GM Fundraising celebrates 15 years and £1,000,000 raised with Hope House
GM Fundraising, the industry’s charity of choice, is pleased to celebrate its 15th year of working with Hope House Children’s Hospices. This is a double celebration, as the charity can also reveal that together they have reached the fantastic milestone of £1,000,000 raised.

On 10th May a celebratory lunch was held at Hope House’s Sandstone Centre in honour of this achievement. Refreshments were provided by hospice volunteers, before speeches from Hope House’s Chair of Trustees, Barbara Evans, CEO Andy Goldsmith and former CEO David Featherstone, praising the team’s efforts and providing some gentle ribbing of Founder Gary Morton – a mark of the close relationship between the two organisations.
The day ended with the unveiling of a new plaque and artwork commissioned by a local artist (provided free of charge). The plaque is the first and only one of its kind to feature in the hospice due to its home from home nature. Each team member present was presented with a replica of the print to take home and thanked individually for all their contributions.

Announcing Modus
Eurocell has announced Modus®, the UK’s first fully integrated window and door system, available with three stunning sash design options.
The contemporary style of Modus® is distinctly different to existing chamfered and ovolo profile systems that make up the UK market, most of which were designed over 10 years ago.

A £3m investment by Eurocell has created a new aesthetic which offers a higher specification window and still delivers significant cost savings for fabricators.
The UK’s first 75mm six/seven-chamber profile delivers optimum energy efficiency. And 28mm and 44mm bead options enable a wider choice of both double and triple glazing specifications to be used. The result is a U-value of 0.7 from a standard argon gas-filled triple glazed unit, without the need for expensive, esoteric-specification glazing units, and a 1.1 U-value achievable from double-glazed units. Enabling lower-specification glazing units for equivalent performance means fabricators can reduce their glazing costs by up to 27 per cent*.
Modus® is a fully integrated system, which means it enables eight window and door types to be made from a single system – again helping fabricators achieve significant cost savings in terms of stockholding and production efficiencies.
The standard rebate sash, slim rebate and fully flush sash styles offer Eurocell customers an unrivalled aesthetic and range of design options compared to traditional PVC-U systems.

FIT names MADi as show’s chosen charity
MADi Fundraising, A special charity fund set up by window and door industry people, has been chosen as the principal charity for the FIT Show 2014.
Among other activities, FIT has donated a special stand for the charity to raise awareness among visitors and the show’s Gala Dinner will host a fundraising casino sponsored by Solidor.
MADi was launched by three Hope 66 riders, Solidor Group MD Gareth Mobley, Window Widgets owner Dan Gil and Universal Arches MD Leon Day, after Dan’s youngest daughter Maddie was diagnosed with bone marrow failure shortly after they returned from the charity US cycle marathon.
Funds raised by MADi at the event will be passed to the Anthony Nolan Trust, which supports bone marrow and stem cell donations for people with blood cancers and similar disorders, and other fund-raising events are already planned for the near future.

Mila has been a supporter of the G-Awards for many years, and was the proud winner of the Component Supplier of the Year Award in both 2011 and 2013.

Significant rise in IBG requests
After reporting recently that a massive 80% of companies contacted regarding their Insurance Backed Guarantee (IBG) arrangements had no knowledge of the impending changes to mandatory IBG requirements for installers, HomePro says that the message seems to be getting through, albeit slowly.
HomePro had revealed earlier that, instead of discussing its popular IBG policies, its staff found themselves informing installers about the changes that will compel every member of Competent Person Schemes to give their customers financial protection on every installation. It is no longer an option simply to offer an IBG – every homeowner must be given one for every installation.
The company, one of the largest providers of IBGs in the UK with more than 1,000,000 policies issued insuring more than £3.5billion worth of home improvements in the UK, is now engaged in an extensive campaign in a bid to ensure that its products were understood as the new rules become mandatory on 6th June this year.
“Now,” says Homepro’s Head of Compliance Jim Keane, “installers do seem to be getting the message about the changes, which may prevent their ability to issue self-assessment certificates. When we set out on our campaign to promote HomePro products as the deadline approached, we found that eight out of ten of the installers we contacted had no knowledge of the imminent changes, which also include new rules regarding the MTC card holder’s abilities in domestic window and door installation and surveying.”

Reducing external condensation – not performance – with launch of View Clear
Saint-Gobain Glass has taken another major step forward in glass coating technology with the launch of SGGViewclear – offering strong anti-condensation protection and best in class WERS performance.
SGGViewclear is an innovative coating deposited through state of the art magnetron coating sputter technology. The coating is designed to keep the external glass pane temperature above the dew point, helping to prevent condensation from forming. The result is a high-performance glazing solution that maintains excellent visibility through the window by significantly reducing the number of days affected by condensation.
SGGViewclear has a unique position in the market having been designed so that fabricators and installers can sell the benefits of an anti-condensation solution but also maintain strong thermal performance. This is achieved by minimising the solar heat degradation arising from a coating on face 1 of the IGU.
