AluK appoints BIM Coordinator to further support its customer base
13th May 2014

AluK (GB), manufacturer of aluminium window, door and curtain walling systems, has appointed Stephen Watkins as the company’s Building Information Modelling (BIM) Coordinator.

Stephen brings with him 13 years’ experience in the commercial curtain wall and cladding industry, working with high profile fabricators such as Glamalco and System Glaze. Following his appointment as AluK’s Technical Support in November 2013, his role was expanded to include BIM coordination.

The importance of BIM in the industry is ever growing, especially since all government funded construction projects in the UK will need to comply with the requirements of level 2 BIM by 2016. However, there has also been an increase in calls for BIM compliance from architects and contractors alike, showing that BIM is becoming well-established within private construction projects as well as the mandatory Government funded projects.

Russell Yates, Managing Director, AluK comments: “In an effort to meet both our clients’ requirements and to stay at the forefront of the BIM movement, we have appointed Stephen to provide our clients with the required BIM knowledge and support.”

In addition to assisting AluK’s clients and sales teams with project specific design drawings, construction interfaces and solutions within the system constraints, Stephen is also focusing on 3D model content in Revit format and IFC schedule data for each product. He is responsible for project specific content creation to assist the customer base implement BIM, whilst ensuring that all relevant legislation is adhered to.

Steve Watkins says: “In offering our 3D model components to clients at the preliminary stage of the project, we have already made the first step in getting specified as an approved systems suppliers on projects. BIM encompasses the management and the value of data across the whole asset lifecycle and our involvement at the early stages ensures that this is achieved.”
