Weekly Email News for the Glass, Glazing & Fenestration Industries

Dear Tony
20th May 2014

I agree with Justin Furness’ comments in his letter in last week’s Glazine (14.05.14). The industry’s focus is on keeping heat in the home in winter, but just like conservatories we also need to look at how we keep our buildings cool in summer.

According to a report by the Met Office, our summers are getting drier and hotter. The heat wave of 2003, which resulted in 2,000 excess deaths in the UK alone, they say will become the norm by the 2040s across Europe. Our buildings need to adapt to keep the heat out in summer.

Swisspacer is widely used for this in countries with hot climates because it’s such an effective insulator. In cold weather, Swisspacer prevents warm air from escaping through the window. It has the opposite effect in warm temperatures, stopping heat getting in through the window. We call this ‘Cool Edge’. Swisspacer’s Caluwin energy-calculating app, which can be downloaded free from iTunes (http://bit.ly/1emtuRV) and Android stores (http://bit.ly/1n8hjru) lets users calculate the energy and money savings in both winter and summer, in heat and cold.

Sincerely,
Vic De Costa
