Sliding solutions use space intelligently in education environments

As a £2billion fund extension to the coalition’s school building programme has been announced, P C Henderson, manufacturer of sliding gear systems, advises how space can be reconfigured intelligently in existing facilities. Schools can apply for funding for repairs which will be available in 2015. By installing sliding door hardware, spaces can be transformed, not just repaired.

Using space to its full advantage can provide value for money and improve classrooms. In a school in Scotland, P C Henderson’s Mansion and Majestic hardware was used to provide dual functionality as a whiteboard transformed into a door to create essential cupboard space behind.

P C Henderson’s Flexirol was installed in the beautifully designed woodland kitchen and classroom for students and visitors of the Ruskin Mill College, Gloucestershire. The new doors can slide across to create multiple layouts and an extra classroom when needed. When folded away the hardware creates an open and welcoming foyer entrance to the building which is used for conferences, events and teaching.

Sliding door hardware can also be utilised in school gyms. A curtain system can be installed to divide the area to allow two classes to use the space at the same time.

The importance of creating a space that supports inclusive learning is also a key consideration. Sliding doors accommodate larger opening sizes allowing pupils who use walking aids or wheelchairs to use the school’s facilities with independence and confidence. Sliding doors are also the safer option as they eliminate the intrusive swing door.
