The acquisition trail

Another major acquisition was announced today and it’s celebrations from all concerned as US giant Quantex reveals the purchase of HL Plastics, Wegoma Machinery Sales and Vintage Windows to become UK stablemates of its 2011 acquisition of Edgetech.

The statement from Quanex to US financial media speaks of synergy, not only in terms of Quanex gaining from HL’s expertise in PVC-U for its own extrusion business but also for ‘synergy opportunities’ with Edgetech. It adds that the deal: “Presents highly complementary product growth opportunities to existing HL customers in conservatory roofs, hardware, foam trim products and related categories.”

The UK statement doesn’t go into figures but the US release speaks of the HL acquisition as “an all-cash transaction valued at approximately $145M.” Read story here

And speaking of figures, in a letter to The Glazine this week, Nick Dutton of Polyframe doesn’t quite go as far as Disraeli and Mark Twain in condemning statistics as ‘lies, damned lies…etc’ but he does make the point that you can crunch a number in different ways and you never have the whole picture until you read the footnote which, as he astutely points out, no one ever does. read email here

Whether or not the figures add up for you, we hope you enjoy this week’s issue.

She is credited with transforming the Group from a small family run business to a £22million global success with range of compact cranes and lifting equipment that are familiar to many in commercial glazing and construction. Founded in 1995 with a £5,000 budget, GGR now employs more than 100 staff at depots in Oldham, Thame and Glasgow.

UK out of deflation

The UK emerged from its brief period of deflation in May, according to figures released today.

The Office for National Statistics said the Consumer Prices Index (CPI) rose by 0.1% in the year to May 2015, compared with a 0.1% fall in the year to April.

Transport services provided the largest upward contribution to the figures, notably air fares with the timing of Easter in April a likely factor in the movement. There were also significant upward effects from food and motor fuels.

From:
Nick Dutton
CEO, Polyframe Group

Life is too short to get carried away by company listings or small errors. But many of your readers, including our customers and suppliers, will have been surprised that Polyframe didn’t figure in the Top 10 in Insight Data’s recent report. We appeared 11th in the Top 30 with a turnover of £20.3m for Polyframe (Trade) Ltd.

Insight explained that to create consistency between companies they’d “elected to operate a single company model where we listed a single trading PVCU fabricator”.

The latest Fabricator & Installer Market Report by Insight Data makes for positive reading for us as a Spectus Vertical Slider fabricator, as the report names the vertical sliding sash window ‘the stand-out PVC-U product of 2014 …with 7,495 installers now actively offering this product, an increase of 600 firms compared to 2013.’

It confirms what we have long believed, that consumers are becoming more discerning when it comes to their choice of window.
