All systems go! Let’s get to FIT

A fortnight away, and the FIT show is now well and truly on the horizon with what can only be described as a PR blitz from all the exhibitor’s public relations companies, and the organisers themselves, over the past three months – take a look at the FIT Show column if you need any further proof – hitting the trade media. If you haven’t heard about the industry’s UK trade show, then you have been either out of the country for the past six months or giving eremitism (the state of being a hermit; seclusion from society) a go.

So are we in for another show success? Or, as has been the case for previous trade shows, the upturn in economic fortune going to provide a barrier to those fabricators and installers who should be going? Perhaps opting to stay away in order to service their order books?

I, for one, hope that the latter does not occur. The fenestration industry needs a successful trade show, regardless of where it is held, and we should be mindful that the next outing for FIT will not be until 2016. So, if you had any doubts, reschedule your diary and get along to Telford in two weeks time, where you will see the latest products, developments and initiatives the industry has to offer.

Also look out for The Glazine FIT Show preview which will be broadcast over three days next week and feature the most up to date information on FIT Show exhibitors, seminars, and activities. To ensure that you are included contact me on tony@the-glazine.com

I hope you enjoy this week’s issue.

Dear Tony

Anthony Jones (The Glazine 20 May) took exception to my letter (The Glazine 13th May) about Triple Glazing: ‘an example of much of what is wrong with our industry’.

We can argue our different perspectives, but we can agree the importance of fact.

Anthony states as fact that, ‘Triple glazing is not a better option unless there is at least 44mm sealed units.’ In other words, triple is no better than double unless the triple is at least 44mm. But that isn’t fact, it is simplistic and incorrect.

Our best Heritage 2800 (28mm) double glazed U value is 1.29 W/m²K. Our best Heritage 2800 (40mm) triple glazed U value is 0.82 W/m²K.

Our best Heritage 2800 (28mm) double glazed WER is an A+ 12. Our best Heritage 2800 (40mm) triple glazed WER is an A+ 25.

A 44mm unit would improve these triple glazed figures slightly, but to say a consumer won’t benefit in relation to its energy saving performance from correctly specified triple glazing (unless it’s 44mm) is simply not true.

This Week's News

Construction activity falls as fears grow about reliance on house building

House building failed to sustain the growth in construction activity in April according to recent figures, despite it still accounting for a third of the total value of new contracts awarded.

A report released recently reveals that the total value of all new construction contracts awarded in April fell by 1.8 per cent compared to the month before, with the number of projects also 6.6 per cent lower than March.

These figures are taken from Barbour ABI's latest Economic & Construction Market Review, which also shows that residential construction had the highest proportion of contracts awarded by value in April, with 33 per cent of the UK total. Only two of the past 13 months have seen residential construction take a slice less than 30 per cent, fuelling fears that the construction industry is in danger of becoming too reliant on the housing sector.

The report goes on to highlight London’s continued hold on the market, with the capital accounting for 16 per cent of the total value of new contracts awarded. Four of the top 10 most valuable contracts were located in the city, including phase one of the Leamouth Peninsula residential development worth £200 million, the £95 million Creechurch Place office development (formerly One Mitre Square) and the ‘Quantum Leap’ redevelopment programme of the London Clinic worth £58 million. Scotland came out on top overall, accounting for 21 per cent of all contracts by value, but this is mainly due to the Neart na Gaoithe offshore wind farm project off the Fife coast, worth £675 million.

On the findings of the report, Michael Dall, lead economist at Barbour ABI, commented: “With economic output only 0.6 per cent below its pre-crisis peak in Q1 2008, there is no question that the economy is experiencing a growth phase. Construction, too, has continued to grow over recent months, and the recent ONS output figures show the first quarter of this year was at 5.4 per cent higher than the equivalent period in 2013.

Trustmark welcomes new guideline on tougher sentencing for rogue traders

The new sentencing guideline published this week has been welcomed by TrustMark, the Government-endorsed quality mark for reputable tradesmen, as it could mean tougher sentencing for rogue traders who defraud and rip off the public.
TrustMark contributed to the Sentencing Council’s consultation last year and endorsed a revised framework for sentencing that will affect rogue traders who operate on the black market and win business by fraudulently using registration marks.
Liz Male, chairman of TrustMark, says:

“TrustMark applauds the introduction of the new sentencing guideline which we hope will result in tougher sentencing for cowboy builders and rogue traders who operate in the black market, swoop in on victims of floods, storms and other home damage, and who often like to win business by fraudulently using registration marks and pretending to be ‘approved’.

“We are delighted that the new sentencing guideline puts so much emphasis on victim impact, as well as taking into account the victim’s vulnerability. This is particularly important when it comes to home repairs and improvements because the impact on a victim can be huge, whatever the size of the financial loss. Often it is a homeowner’s personal space and refuge that has been violated, and their confidence badly damaged in just the place where they should feel safest.

Death of the QR code?

Composite door pioneer, Solidor, have just launched what they believe is the glazing industry’s first Augmented Reality (AR) app, to present three different corporate videos from a mobile phone or tablet and believe it could be the demise of the QR code.

Augmented Reality, or AR, is about hidden content, usually behind a marker on a page or on film. A downloaded software app needs to be installed on a device such as a mobile phone or tablet and used in a steady position to identify and analyse a marker in a near identical way that we recognise QR codes.

Solidor has launched their exciting new AR app to give customers additional interactive material, when they simply point their phone or tablet at an augmented reality (AR) trigger photo or logo from the Solidor brochure, or any other printed material with Solidor branding.

Exova investment triples window testing capacity

Exova Warringtonfire, the fire and security testing and certification provider, has announced new investment in door and window testing capabilities at its Willenhall site, with new window durability test rigs tripling existing capacity.

The investment will enhance capacity and allow a faster turnaround of testing results and reports for customers.

Mark West, Door & Window Laboratory Manager, explains: “The recent move of our Door & Window testing division into its own dedicated facility has freed up the extra space to increase our durability testing capabilities. We have received a large number of enquires for these tests in the past 12 months, and this expansion allows us to complete the suite of operational, security and weather tests within a much shorter timeframe.”

Durability testing of windows has become a key area since it was introduced into the British Standard for operational & strength requirements BS6375-2 in 2009. For products to claim compliance with PAS24, and the material specific standards BS644 for timber windows, BS7412 for PVC windows or BS4873 for aluminium windows, or be entered into Secured by Design approved certification schemes, all windows are required to undertake a minimum of 10,000 opening and closing cycles.  These ‘real life’ tests simulate years of service of a window in just a few days, and can identify potential problems far in advance of failures in the operational environment.

Business Micros moves to new premises

Business Micros has moved its Warrington based sales and installation team to a new purpose designed office in nearby Newton-le-Willows.

The new office, which was been stylishly converted from its original use as a pub, has been planned to meet the specific needs of the software specialist, with both private and open plan areas, a mezzanine floor and of course the very highest specification telephone and broadband system.

Managing Director Graeme Bailey says the location is perfect for the business, right at the heart of the north west’s motorway network, and the building itself provides a much improved working environment for the team.

Compulsory IBGs welcomed by DGCOS

The Double Glazing and Conservatory Ombudsman Scheme (DGCOS) is delighted that all domestic installation guarantees must have financial backing from 6th June.

“This legislation from the DCLG is long-overdue,” explains DGCOS CEO Richard Christie. “However, DGCOS since its inception has mandated its members to issue every retail customer with an Insurance Backed Guarantee (IBG).”

“The existing system of ‘offering IBGs’ can lead to worrying problems for consumers,” continues Richard. “Often where an IBG is offered it isn’t always taken up – in my experience very few consumers offered an IBG after installation do so. Not least because consumers have to pay for IBGs themselves at this stage. Add to this the fact that it can be easy for consumers to mess up the paperwork, with many – if not most - forgetting to complete and return the forms, and it’s obvious that more needed to be done to protect consumers.”

First quarter sales up 8%

2014 is set to be another record year for Swisspacer. The company reports sales in the first quarter up 8% on 2013. After launching in the UK in 2008 the company quickly grew and claimed to be the market leader in 2011.

Marketing & Sales Manager, Vic De Costa says: “We are very pleased with Swissspacer sales so far this year. They are even higher than 2013, which was itself a record year!
