Three days of ‘intense discussion’ start next week when Low Carbon Homes Derbyshire goes online to consider how the county can rapidly scale up the retrofitting of housing across the county, with Glasgow, Manchester and Liverpool next.

Sixteen presenters have been assembled to highlight the opportunities ahead as the county grapples with the societal and economic impacts of the current pandemic and climate change.

The free conference is aimed at local housing associations, developers, suppliers, installers, house builders and community organisations in the D2N2 region.
The event follows the government’s recent pledge of £50 million for local councils to carry out retrofitting work, as well as a list of recommendations made by the UK Citizen’s Assembly for Climate Change for finding local solutions to the challenge.

Starting Tuesday, Oct 6, three mornings of presentations and debate have been curated with Derbyshire local authorities and University of Derby to meet the most pressing retrofit challenges of the county:

Dr Fred Paterson, Associate Professor for Sustainable Business at the University of Derby Business School, who is to chair the conference, said: “To create a net-zero Derbyshire by 2050, we need to radically shift the energy efficiency of our homes. Domestic buildings in Derbyshire are responsible for 27% of all greenhouse gas emissions in the county and 9,000 homes need ‘deep retrofitting’ every year for the next three decades. That’s 179 homes per week for the next 30 years, so the time for action is now. This event provides an invaluable springboard for stakeholders across the region to take action on this important climate change solution.”

Low Carbon Homes on 6-8 October, hosted by Derbyshire County Council, Chesterfield Borough Council, South Derbyshire District Council and the University of Derby, is a free-to-attend event bringing professionals from inter-related sectors together to collaborate and consider the scale of the challenge, the solutions available and the barriers to overcome. After Derbyshire, Low Carbon Homes will be staging further events across the UK in 2020: Glasgow, Manchester and Liverpool.
