Disruptor disrupted

It is all too familiar that when one business collapses, the ripples of damage spread a long way. So when this purpose-built disruptor, Safeglaze finds itself disrupted by its intended prey, the spread of damage from a business so big – and some city observers say it was well into eight-figure annual sales – will be significant to say the least.

Camden itself returned into profit last year after heavy losses in 2016 so if there is any consolation for it at all, it is that the bad news didn’t kick it while it was down.

Elsewhere we hear that, despite the best efforts by all concerned, the UK’s PVC recycling is being held back by lack of supply of post-consumer frames. We might hope that with the demon of throwaway plastic so high in the headlines at the moment, a few more installers might wake up to doing their bit.

So, amidst that and all the other news this week, we hope there is something of interest to everyone in this weeks issue.

Meanwhile, Safestyle shares have doubled from 48.00GBp in the three weeks since the company ended the two rivals’ court battle with a formal non-compete agreement with Mitu Misra, the original founder of Safestyle and the man behind the aggressive new rival.

UK Recycling held back by shortage of P-C frames

PVC recycling in the UK is being seriously held back by a shortage of post-consumer windows for processing, despite other countries contributing to a Europe-wide record high, according to Recovinyl, the industry’s recycling scheme.

As reported earlier this year a total of nearly 640,000 tonnes of recycled PVC waste was produced across Europe in 2017, representing a 13% increase from 2016 with increased volumes recorded in France and Italy.

House moves cool amid price fall fears

New listings with estate agents in October fell by 5.5% across the UK, and by 6.8% in London, as recent house price falls, particularly in the South East and London, may have dissuaded homeowners from putting their homes on the market.

According to the latest Property Supply Index compiled by online estate agents Housesimple, new listings fell from 72,593 in September to 68,598 in October.

‘Perfect storm’ of wage inflation ahead?

Is the UK industry facing a ‘perfect storm’ of spiraling wage inflation and declining availability of labour? ONS figures for October suggest that it is and, according to one industry observer, it could be creating some serious challenges ahead.

The figures reveal that wages were 3.1% up in the three months ending in August, on the same time last year, representing the largest average wage increase since the 2008 economic collapse.
