And the good
news is…

There can’t be many companies that see their shares rocket by 30% after posting seven-figure losses but then Safestyle is no ordinary company. Or perhaps more to the point, this chapter in its history is anything but ordinary. Of course, many will say it may never be the money-tree it was once was, considering a business model that has been overtaken by both cold-calling legislation and consumer preferences, but a turnaround of such dramatic proportion says it may be a little premature to underestimate it. This Week's News

Safestyle shares jump 30% despite heavy losses

Safestyle UK saw its shares climb by almost 30% on the back of a £5.7million first-half loss as its CEO signalled the victory in a court battle with aggressive me-too rival Safeglaze as the beginning of the end of the most disastrous chapter in its history.

"The results reflect an unprecedented set of circumstances faced in the first half of the year,” said Mike Gallacher, the turnaround specialist brought in by the company earlier this year.

“The litigation we initiated against an aggressive new market entrant has now concluded in an out of court settlement; as a result we expect some recovery in the trading position of the company in the second half.”

Groups join forces for
Fire Door Safety Week

The British Woodworking Federation and the Building Research Establishment have joined forces in a bid to raise awareness of the importance of fire doors and to help advance standards in their design, manufacture and installation.

This week is Fire Door Safety Week and BRE is supporting the campaign and the BWF to develop a series of emotive and educational fire door safety films highlighting the effects of fire and smoke and the need to ensure that best practice and standards are followed throughout the industry.

Hannah Mansell, who is spokesperson for FDSW and the BWF’s Head of Technical Research and Insight, chair of the Passive Fire Protection Forum and a trustee of the Children’s Burns Trust, said: “We’d like to thank BRE for its ongoing support, in allowing us to use its facilities for our filming.  We are delighted to be working in collaboration with a cross-section of the industry, to raise awareness of these life-saving messages around fire door safety as well as working to help raise standards to ensure the safety of building occupants and firefighters.”

Fensa targets ‘grey market’ cowboys

Fensa has appointed a brand consultancy  to explore ‘one the construction industry’s great unknowns’ –  illegal and unethical operators who are taking business from bona fide traders and leave homeowners without protection.

Anda Gregory, the organisation’s managing director, said that in the past few years Fensa has been made aware of companies not registering window or door installations and in some cases installing windows that are not complying with Building Regulations.

She added: “As the market leader, Fensa has a responsibility to ensure that our brand is well positioned to clearly communicate the role Fensa plays, not only to build value for our members, but to provide protection for homeowners.

Flush is flying high in
ten-year forecast

Nearly half of fabricators see flush sashes becoming as important as conventional casements within ten years, according to research published this week.

The survey, by MRA Research for Timberweld, goes on to report that a quarter of those that are not yet manufacturing them expect to start within a year.

Of those questioned who are now making flush sashes, it shows that 15% by volume are mechanically-jointed and 90% of those that are welded are done conventionally with 45-degree corner grooves.

The Door & Hardware Federation has announced the formation of a Commercial Department to support the organisation’s growth, particularly with its training offering.
