One down….two to go…..

As I put the final touches to this week’s Glazine, a healthy proportion of the Glazine readership will either be wending their way back to their homes, or to their hotels as the first day of the 2014 FIT Show draws to a close.

Most of the feedback has been very positive, although some exhibitors experienced a drop in activity mid afternoon – for some a welcome relief – after a frenetic start to the proceedings. For those unable to attend Day One the live feed from FIT Show TV, employing two very chatty interviewers, was novel, useful, and in one case very humourous, as the interviewee experienced a little difficulty in getting his words out.

Day Two promises to be busier, if my previous experience of exhibitions is anything to go by and also judging from the comments of exhibitors and today’s visitors. I will be attending the final two days of the show and hope to catch up with as many people as time allows.

I look forward to seeing you there…..

Dear Tony

Keith Clark – Obituary

We are sad to announce the untimely passing of Keith Clark, former Technical Director of Premdor and Director of the British Woodworking Federation.

Keith was involved with the Timber Door and Window sector for his entire working life, initially at Crosby Doors and then following the restructure for Premdor.  Few are able to match his record of service and commitment to the industry.  Keith attended his first technical meeting of the BWF as a “new boy” back in the 70’s and always said that he regarded his involvement with the BWF as a privilege to work at the heart of things and serve both his company and the wider industry.

Keith was active in many aspects of BWF’s marketing and technical committee and representational work during his lengthy association with the federation.  He was closely involved in the setting up of the now successful and influential BWF-CERTIFIRE Fire Door Scheme in 1996.  Keith served on the BWF Council since March 2004 and as a Director of BWF from April 2005 until his retirement in December 2012.  An ever present attendee of both the Doors and Windows technical committees, he became Chairman of these in 2000 and continued this role until his retirement.  Keith brought an understated authority to all he did – when he spoke everyone stopped to listen.

VEKA Recycling’s acquisition grows UK network

Veka Recycling has added a second waste PVC collection and processing facility to its UK operation with the acquisition of family-run Trafford Services (Midlands) Ltd, for an undisclosed sum.

From June 1st, the Bilston site in the West Midlands adds 20,000 sq ft of weighbridge, processing and storage facilities to Veka Recycling’s business. Post-industrial and post-consumer PVC window frame material is reduced in size and sent in 24-tonne loads to Kent where it is processed to a high standard of purity for use in new goods.

“Having this second centrally-located site means that local installers, fabricators and waste management companies can benefit from our reliable service with prompt payment for waste PVC frames,” says Tony Cattini, Managing Director of Veka Recycling.

“Trafford Services has worked closely with us since 2007, so the company is already familiar with our focus on getting the infeed quality right and reducing contamination. This is vital in maintaining the high quality of our 100% recycled PVC-U pellet and micronised PVC-U (pulver),” he continues.

The successful acquisition is the culmination of year-long negotiations and builds on lessons learnt from Veka Recycling’s pilot trial in Barnsley last year.

Response to the Queen’s speech

In response to the speech given by the Queen at the State Opening of Parliament, the Build Show welcomes the announcements of reform and new legislation that will help the housebuilding sector to grow.

The Queen announced a number of measures that will benefit the industry including: a reform to the planning system supporting small housebuilding firms, new legislation to sell high-value government land for development, a continued promotion of the Help to Buy and Right to Buy schemes and a pledge to increase the number of apprenticeship places to two million by the end of parliament.

A crucial announcement to highlight is the change in Zero Carbon Homes, whereby the government is introducing ‘Allowable Solutions’ that will support small housebuilding firms that struggle to meet the ever-increasing environmental standards. The changes are designed to encourage the acceleration of housebuilding across the country by recognising the difficulty in building to the new level five standards for firms that lack large capital backing.

Invisible but very strong. Luís Figo vs AGC Glass

With the World Cup just two days away and football fever mounting, check out this YouTube video, produced by AGC, featuring football legend Luís Figo versus AGC Glass.

Suppliers of the official glass roof for player benches for the 2014 FIFA World Cup Brazil™, AGC has appointed Luís Figo as the ambassador to promote this unprecedented project

The glass roof, made from chemically strengthened glass, provides unparalleled visibility, durability and damage resistance. One of the key attributes is clear visibility, and the rear portion of the bench is applied with anti-reflective coating, making its reflective properties thirteen times lower than conventional glass to ensure the best possible visual experience for football fans. Protection for players and staff on the bench is provided by a double layer of chemically strengthened Dragontrail™ X, considered the world’s strongest cover glass for electronic devices.

Approved IBG provider list increases to 12

FENSA has agreed terms with a list of 12 IBG insurance companies that can supply policies to its registered companies –the FENSA Approved Provider List.

All insurance companies listed have been the subject of due diligence by FENSA that has involved checking the cover provided in the policies that will be sold to homeowners.

“The undertaking of due diligence by FENSA has taken longer than we would have liked,” comments FENSA managing director Chris Mayne.   “This process is vital in ensuring that the right cover is offered and that all providers have the processes in place required by us as a Competent Persons Scheme.”

Zero carbon exemption will create more local homes

Recent press reports stating that small housing developments will be exempt from some zero carbon homes requirements is a positive move towards helping to create more homes and consumer choice says the Federation of Master Builders (FMB).

Brian Berry, Chief Executive of the FMB, said: “Speculation ahead of the Queen’s Speech that small housing developments will be exempt from some zero carbon homes requirements is very welcome news. The FMB has been warning for some time that the rapid implementation of the zero carbon homes policy is threatening to deluge smaller house builders in a tsunami of costs that hinder their ability to build.”

Berry continued: “Our research shows that small house builders consistently report that the cost implications for smaller developments are much higher than those estimated in government impact assessments. Worse still, SME house builders have been faced with a double whammy. Unlike volume house builders with large banks of prior consents which can be built out according to previous standards, SME house builders have been bearing the weight of extra costs and a steep learning curve immediately, without the resources which larger firms have at their disposal.”
