It seems like only yesterday………

With the FIT Show just around the corner, I invited the Managing Director of FIT Events, Paul Godwin to lead us up the final straight…..

How can it be possible that so many of us will be at The FIT Show in Telford this time next week…surely we were there just a few weeks back?

Having lived and breathed the next FIT Show for the past 14 months (yes - it was more than a year ago!), we have slightly different feelings I suspect than from the rest of the industry. There is a subtle change between last year’s inaugural FIT Show and this second outing: where previously there was mainly hope, now hope has been joined, outweighed even, by expectation. What has remained the same is the faith and the feeling that this remains a team effort by the industry, not just our small band of people.

We know of course a great deal about The FIT Show already…we know that at least 160 exhibitors will be there, and that they will occupy every square metre of space. We know that such luminous brands as Deceuninck and VEKA and Liniar and Eurocell, MACO and Origin and Dutemann, Promac and Emmegi and Haffner and pretty much everyone that is anyone will be there…and they will bring with them literally hundreds of new products and thousands of others that visitors will probably never have seen previously anyway…and the roof will be bursting with so many ideas and so much knowledge such as how to convert 8 our of 10 sales leads…and all about the new consumer rights rules and CE marking and competent persons schemes and…so much going on.

We don’t know of course, if everyone that we have written to and canvassed and advertised to will turn up. We have our hopes that you will all turn up and this time even the car parking will have been sorted, with the addition of thousands of new spaces. And we hope that having made the effort to go you will explore and indulge in everything that is there for you, that after a few hours you will wonder how anyone ever got by without it.

We also know, that the next FIT Show after that will not be until April 2016, so make sure you come along and cram two year’s worth of knowledge and learning and schmoozing into next week.

Don’t miss it then; next time the gap will be a long one.

I hope you enjoy this week’s issue.

Dear Tony

Reg Richmond- An Appreciation

The glazing industry has sadly lost one its true craftsmen.

Reg Richmond who spent his whole working life in the industry, died recently of a cancer related illness at the age of 68. He was one of those rare breed of time served tradesmen that always found solutions, not problems when tackling even the most complicated of glazing installations.

After leaving school, Reg joined the family glazing firm D W Price of Neasden in North West London. His indenture forms were signed by one of the Ide family (T and W Ide). It was whilst working here that he met his wife Carol as well as learning his craft. Price’s were eventually taken over by the Doulton Group. During his time at Doulton Glass he was promoted to Assistant Glazing Manger and eventually Aluminium Department Manager, producing shop fronts and windows using the Glostal sections. At the time, the Commercial Manger of Glostal commented, “Reg is a pest, but he is the nicest pest I have ever known.” I suspect that comment was made because Reg was a stickler for detail in his determination in getting the job done correctly. He was also a very nice guy.

Second growth spurt as project starts soar by 20%

Construction growth surged again in the three months to June after a lull in the first quarter of 2014.

According to fresh figures from industry analysts Glenigan the value of projects starting on site from March to June is 20% higher than a year ago.

The growth spurt was fuelled by non-residential and infrastructure work.

It comes after reports from the Confederation of British Industry that the economy is growing at its fastest pace since its records began in 2003.

Industrial, office, hotel and leisure sectors all saw healthy improvements in the value of starts, lifting the non-residential index by 24% compared to last year.

Underlying civil engineering starts have also expanded rapidly, rising by 38% in the latest period.

FENSA announces sanctions for
non-compliance

FENSA has received confirmation from UKAS* that it has met the Conditions of Authorisation required by the Department of Communities and Local Government (DCLG) - the rules under which FENSA operates.  This means that it has been accepted that a successfully transitioned FENSA Certified installation company will have met all the competency requirements of Transition – including for staff competence.

The FENSA certification approach requires the introduction of a sanctions policy that will be levelled at those registered businesses that do not complete a Transition Inspection by the deadline of 6 June 2014.  These are the details.

Edgetech UK launches TruPlas SDL

Edgetech UK, a Quanex company, launches TruPlas SDL. This is a new Simulated Divided Lite system that gives more choice and greater rigidity.

“The unique I-beam is designed to eliminate any potential twisting within the largest units,” says Alan Fielder, Edgetech’s Director of Sales and Marketing. “We knew this can be a problem with other box section or duplex systems so we engineered TruPlas SDL to overcome this issue.”

The new TruPlas SDL system is available in three colours: black, grey and white. And there’s a full range of connecting keys. The cruciform clip anchors the I-beams in place to prevent rattling. TruPlas SDL also comes in two widths 18mm and 23mm to suit both 12mm and 16mm glass unit cavities.

Hospice appeal tops the £16,000 mark

Mike Crewdson has completed his 200 mile coast-to-coast walk across the North of England in just ten days to raise more than £16,000 – almost double his original target - for St Ann’s Hospice in Manchester.

Taking on the challenge in the memory of his late wife Rosemary Crewdson, Mike set out supported by colleagues from the window industry from St Bees on the Irish Sea on the second anniversary of her death on the 21st of May.

Following in the footsteps of the great fell walker Alfred Wainwright, whose guides made the route famous, Mike then tackled the Lake District, Yorkshire Dales and North York Moors National Parks, plus all the rain the great British weather could throw at him, to arrive at and Robin Hood’s Bay on the North Sea coast.

independent approved IBG providers named

FENSA has published its list of Approved Providers of Insurance Backed Guarantees (IBGs) a week before the deadline by which installers are compelled to provide, rather than simply offer, an IBG to every customer and HomePro, and its approved representative, IPWFI have both been included on that list.

In a statement, FENSA reminds members not only of their new responsibility to provide IBGs without which they will not be issued with Building Regulations Compliance certificates, but also that they must use one of the providers on the organisation’s approved list, as others may not comply with the criteria required under the new regulations. Installers choosing HomePro or IPWFI IBGs will be issued with certificates without delay.

“We are delighted that FENSA has cleared the air and removed any doubts about the new regulations and where installers stand with regard to this key element of the criteria under the changes to the Competent Persons Schemes Rules,” said Sean O’Keeffe, Chairman of the HomePro Group.

Royal Seal of Approval

A newly-developed specialist outreach centre for disabled children in Wokingham was officially opened by Their Royal Highnesses the Earl and Countess of Wessex on Tuesday 6th May - a cause which was supported in more ways than one by local company and Conservatory Outlet Dealer, TradeMark Windows.

‘Our House’, a project of registered charity Building For The Future (BFTF), offers facilities and community support to disabled children and their families. The admirable work of BFTF and its achievements with Our House were sealed with Royal approval when Prince Edward and Sophie visited the centre as part of their time in Berkshire – known as the Royal County - arranged to coincide with the Prince’s recent 50th birthday.

‘It gives me great pleasure to open this building, and I hope it is a wonderful place for children and families to be together,’ Prince Edward said as he unveiled the plaque.

Half of all home owners have requested cash-in-hand building work

More than 55% of all home owners have requested cash-in-hand building work to avoid paying VAT according to new research by the Federation of Master Builders (FMB).

Brian Berry, Chief Executive of the FMB, said: “This research confirms what we already suspected – too many otherwise law-abiding individuals are asking their builder to carry out cash-in-hand construction work at 0% VAT in order to cut costs. What’s more, when the professional builder refuses, the home owner will all-too-often find a rogue trader that is willing to operate within the black economy. That’s when home owners inevitably become ensnared in nightmare situations with sub-standard refurbishment work that has been carried out with little or no regard for health and safety.”

White van women outnumber Polish tradespeople 3 to 1,

The number of migrants working as builders and tradespeople in the UK has almost halved in the last four years, according to a new study into the make-up of the UK’s trades.

The study of 10,000 tradespeople by IronmongeryDirect shows that numbers have fallen to such an extent that, there are now more women tradespeople in the UK than those who are migrants. In fact ‘White Van Women’ are now nearly three times as common as Polish tradespeople.

In 2010 the Health and Safety Executive reported that 8% of tradespeople were migrant workers, however the new research by IronmongeryDirect shows that this has fallen to 4.6%.
