Market research reports difficult times ahead

Industry reports appear to be the order of the day for this weeks edition of The Glazine, as we hear from two organisations who specialise in the analysis and reporting of market trends, as well as informed prediction for the coming years.

And their conclusions give us little to celebrate. Palmer Market Research and D & G Consulting both report that there is little sign of an improvement in trading conditions for the foreseeable future, although there are pockets of success for those with premium priced products.

We also hear from an enterprising Danny Williams at Pioneer Trading who is exporting conservatories to Japan, you can read the about it here.

The GGF is once more in the public eye, after being contacted by the producer of the BBC programme Rip Off Britain, more here.

Finally we are now only eight working days away from the extended closing deadline for entries to the G 12 Awards. Please make sure your entries, are registered at www.g-awards.co.uk. Remember, you have to be in it to win it.

This Week's News

Window, door and conservatory market rises in value – but the overall message stays the same

The domestic windows, doors and conservatories market in Great Britain showed a rise in installed value in 2011 for the first time in five years, according to the latest Palmer Market Research report. However, before starting to celebrate, we should take a closer look at the numbers.

The meagre 1% rise, to a total value of £3.79bilion, far from representing the start of a reversal of fortune for the industry, can essentially be attributed to a move towards more expensive products in a few categories, particularly conservatories.

The 8th Consecutive Year of Decline: when will it end?

Just released, the Annual PVC-U Window, Door and Conservatory Industry Report from independent specialists D&G Consulting is the most up to date study on the current health of and prognosis for our markets, claim the authors.

Detailing the actual performance of the PVC-U window sector for 2011, this comprehensive 130 page report contains detail, figures, analysis and forecasts to 2015 on volumes and values for PVC-U windows, doors (panel, composite, bi-fold and patio) and conservatories. As for all of this series of reports, the latest issue covers all the products by volume and value at system company, fabricator and installer level, and by sector (private housing improvement, social housing improvement, private house building, social house building and non housing applications).

GGF Helps BBC Resolve Warranties Issue

The producer of the BBC TV programme “Rip Off Britain” recently contacted the GGF following an investigation into a GGF Member’s conduct/policy on transferable warranties.

The programme’s producers were concerned that a GGF Member was not offering transferable warranties on windows, meaning a consumer buying a property with new windows fitted would not have any warranty on the glazing. Not only would this be a negative for potential homeowners and property sellers, but it also contravenes the GGF Rules.

The Rotherham-based glass company will continue to be Allianz’s preferred sole supplier for both domestic and commercial glazing services until May 2015.

Pioneer goes east as Japanese develop a taste for English conservatories

Japanese homeowners have developed a taste for yet another British institution. Conservatories built by Essex-based Pioneer Trading now join Burberry raincoats and malt whisky as another product that is being shipped across to the Land of the Rising Sun to satisfy an apparently insatiable hunger for products and institutions from Britain.

Following an initial shipment sent to Japan earlier this year a Japanese DIY chain has placed a regular order for ‘Eigo sanr?mu’ after its customers clamoured for more.

Thermobar Warm Edge Spacer Tube Tops the BFRC’s Chart

The BFRC’s recently revised chart of approved spacer bar conductivity values has awarded Thermobar Warm Edge Spacer Tube with an even lower value of 0.16W/mK¹ with or without its gas barrier tape.  This makes it the highest performing warm edge spacer tube recognised by the BFRC.

Promising private sector housing figures but registrations still down on 2011

New figures released today by NHBC have revealed that private sector housing registrations in the UK had their best month for over a year this July, with 8,105 registrations.  This still however leaves private sector registrations down 10% for the rolling quarter May to July 2012, compared to the same period last year (21,574 in 2012 compared with 23,996 in 2011).

Public sector housing registrations remained subdued.

RIBA Future Trends Survey results for July 2012

The latest results from the Royal Institute of British Architects’ (RIBA) monthly Future Trends Survey illustrate the mixed fortunes in employment and workload experienced by architects working in different UK locations and sectors. The majority of UK architects predict no immediate improvement in their workload with the survey’s overall future Workload Index for July 2012 standing at 0. Architects in London are the most optimistic about their future workload (reporting a balance figure of +10), while Scotland (balance figure -20) and Northern Ireland (balance figure -60) remain the most pessimistic.

The RIBA Future Trends Staffing Index increased to 0 in July 2012, rising from -2 in June 2012.  Although on balance practices are predicting that they will be able to maintain current staffing levels there is little sign of any immediate prospects of growth in overall recruitment.
