The Double Glazing & Conservatory Ombudsman Scheme is reopening the issue of mental health in the first of a new set of podcasts following the organisation’s recent survey into the ‘unspoken struggles’ suffered by many in the industry.

The podcast is headed by DGCOS chief exec Faisal Hussain who launched the discussion earlier this year after a chance meeting with an installer that brought home to him the possible scale of the problem https://www.the-glazine.com/?p=5276 . In the first of a series of podcasts on industry topics, he talks to DGCOS member Thom Emerson of Ideal Window Solutions about the ‘much under-discussed topic’ and the positive steps Thom’s business has taken to support its staff.

Faisal was also shocked to read a press article reporting that 30%of tradespeople had needed time off with mental issues but as many as a further third could be suffering in silence.

He added: “The conversation with Thom is reassuring; pastoral care is more important than ever in our businesses and could be just as simple as asking your colleagues how they are and listening to the response.

“It may be difficult to talk about your mental health and it may make you feel vulnerable. At DGCOS we want to open up the conversation with the industry.”

The organisation is also conducting a confidential survey to open up the conversation on the subject and is inviting everyone in the industry to spend five minutes taking part. The survey is open until  12th April and the results will be published soon after.
