Cornwall Group has taken a major step in reducing its carbon footprint with the installation of the first of three, state-of-the-art, Glaston Tempering Furnaces.

The first toughener has been installed at Birmingham-based Forward Glass, which was acquired by Cornwall Group in December 2023. Holding a long-established reputation for quality, it specialises in toughened and processed glass, supplying a wide range of customers across the trade and commercial sectors.

The new furnace, which has been transported from Finland, will deliver a significant reduction in carbon emissions – cutting an estimated 62.1 tonnes of CO2e annually – aligning with Cornwall Group’s long-term vision for sustainable manufacturing and operational efficiency.

Its advanced heating system ensures more effective energy use and improved heat transfer, leading to a reduction in electricity consumption by approximately 299,984 kWh per year.

The installation is part of Cornwall Group’s wider multi-million-pound investment programme, which includes a further two brand new furnaces due to be installed at different Group sites in 2025 alone.

“Reducing carbon emissions is a key priority for our business and the industry as a whole”, said Mark Mitchell, Chairman of Cornwall Group. “This new furnace allows us to operate more efficiently while making a tangible impact on our carbon footprint.

“And on top of that, rising energy costs and increased demand for thicker glass means that we need to stay ahead of the curve, ensuring we can continue to supply high-quality products, without unexpected price hikes for our customers.”

The Glaston FC Series E 2448 furnace is capable of processing glass sizes up to 2400mm x 4800mm, and toughening glass ranging in thickness from 4mm to 19mm, adhering to EN12150-1 standards. It can also heat strengthen 4mm-8mm glass, ensuring compliance with EN1863.

The furnace delivers high output, processing up to 24 loads per hour and maintaining efficiency across a range of glass types, including soft coated Low-E glass.
