The sum of the parts
We’re all familiar with the idea of saving a quid or two by opting for a few not-quite-top-notch parts, whether it’s generic car spares or secondary-brand software, but you might think we’d be a bit more fussy when it comes to frame reinforcements. Not so, it seems, at least according to Rehau’s Mark Gaida who warns in a letter this week that it could have financial and even legal consequences if the result is an under-spec product, potentially impacting on manufacturers’ warranties, energy rating and many other aspects of performance. Another quality issue altogether is the challenge of attracting enough people with the right skills into the industry so it was reassuring to see a big and positive step towards the solution with the inaugural conference of the new Building Our Skills organisation. While all agree the issue is neither small nor simple, the gathered speakers and delegates went a long way towards identifying the starting points towards tackling the problem and we can expect to hear much more from them in the near future.
