Winds of change

The news that Roy Frost and Alan Rothwell have stepped in to rescue Listers is not only another step towards consolidation in the fabrication sector but also the creation of another multi-centre and, perhaps more importantly, multi-system PVC-U fabricator, not to mention the glint of aluminium in the mix
Read Story. Of course, it’s not quite in the Polyframe league but it is still part of a clear trend and, whether the syscos like it or not, the attraction of the one-trick pony seems to be fading in favour of choice – and the more, the better.

While we’re still in crystal ball mode, there’s grim news from the latest Palmer report about tougher times to come, along with the almost obligatory apparition of the B-word, though he does point to continuing buoyancy in the high-value and niche end of the market. Read Story

Then, between the two, while echoing Palmer’s latter point, a letter from Rob McGlennon tells us to ‘lose our sense of unease’ about all the upheavals and embrace change with enthusiasm, especially by stepping beyond the ‘white, square’ commodity product towards more added value. Read Letter

And finally: G17 finalists, don’t be disappointed if we have edited the level of your glee back down to something nearer to terrestrial. Every one of the shortlistings is an achievement in the face of strong competition and, for some, the beginning of even greater things come on November 17.

Until then, do enjoy this week’s issue.

This Week's News

Frost and Rothwell back Listers rescue

Lister Trade frames has been acquired from administration by Roy Frost’s GJB Holdings with further backing from industry entrepreneur Alan Rothwell.

The £12million-sales Stoke-based fabricator began its new ownership with the assurance that it is continuing with the Veka Halo system as well as Residence Collection, Solidor, and ALUK.

Listers had been placed into administration on Aug 29. It had spent heavily on new machinery and facilities in the past months and, according to administrators, did not see returns on that investment as quickly as it had expected. Last week, Mark Warren, MD of the 40-year-old business announced he was stepping down, handing the reins to fellow directors Darren Pusey and Mark’s brother Phil Warren, both of whom will now continue in the management team.

That was then
– Palmer adds grim forecast to past growth

Headwinds …slowdown …Brexit uncertainty – the latest Palmer report offsets recent above-forecast growth with a less than cheerful forecast of what is to come.

The industry performed above forecast in 2016, according to the report, ‘The Window, Door and Conservatory Markets in Housing in Great Britain 2017’, including growth of 1% in volume terms and 7% in value terms to £4.5bn, driven by a shift towards higher-end products.

This included significant growth in bi-fold doors and growing sales of foiled and mechanically jointed/timber effect PVC-U windows, the former up 9.3% in 2016 to 42,700 door sets.

We Have Email

From: Rob McGlennon,
MD, Deceuninck UK

The industry could be forgiven for reacting with a sense of unease about the recent surge of change in company ownership and brand leaders, acquisitions and closures. Someone even commented last week that it feels like we’re poised on the edge of a cliff reminiscent of 2007, the start of a big meltdown.

However, today’s market is nothing like ten years ago and - albeit tentative - green shoots of economic recovery are appearing. Unemployment is at its lowest since 1975 and the pound is at a 15-month high against the dollar after the Bank of England fuelled speculation about pending rate rises.

From: Mike Rigby,

It takes a disaster, major loss of life or destruction to property to get Britain to focus on fire. So, fire regulations have only improved significantly after serious fires, starting with the Great Fire of London in 1666.

After the Grenfell Tower fire, people will remember external cladding as the culprit because the search narrowed rapidly to focus on a single cause of failure. It doesn’t seem that PVC windows were implicated in any way, despite attempts by anti-PVC campaigners to implicate them. But experience of what went wrong in previous fires suggests multiple failures will be to blame. It will be a mix of product, practice and policing, not just one cheaper product, or one inappropriate spec.
