Divide and rule
It is entirely coincidence but we hear this week two separate announcements from major UK fabricators adding more systems to their respective repertoires, one diversifying from almost a single source in PVC-U Read Story, the other not only breaking into the aluminium market but also now claiming a record eight systems in total. Read Story.
It all seems a far cry from a few years ago when single sourcing was the norm and system suppliers were very keen for fabricators to keep it that way. Now, more and more it seems those suppliers are not only competing for the affections of the fabricators but in many cases, they are actually competing for the custom within each factory.

Elsewhere, in the same week that the Lords have blocked the Chancellor from bolstering the treasury by cutting back support for the poorest in our society, we hear the taxman has caught another double glazing salesman robbing the public purse with large scale tax evasion. You don’t have to be a Corbynista to enjoy the irony of that one. Read Story.
On the same theme, we have a fascinating feature on the work of the HMRC double glazing taskforce that is so efficiently pursuing these offenders, written exclusively by the head of the unit. Read Story.
Meanwhile, we hope you don’t find this week’s issue too taxing.

This Week's News
Jail threat for another
tax-dodging salesman
A former double glazing salesman who failed to declare his earnings or pay Income Tax or National Insurance Contributions, defrauding taxpayers of almost £32,000 has been sentenced.
Officers from HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) discovered that Andrew Steed, 62, was paid £275,900 in commission over a nine-year period on the sales he generated for a national window company but had failed to complete Self Assessment returns.

Special feature:
The taxman’s back
– and getting even bigger
When HMRC created a special regional taskforce to track down double glazing tax dodgers in the South West last year, they aimed to uncover £1million in unpaid revenue. In the end, they netted nearly £2million and, now the taskforce has gone UK-wide, it has set a target of £8million.
This week’s report on yet another tough court sentence is only the latest in the series of jailed salesmen, five-figure fines and even bigger pay-back orders have already been reported in our recent issues. Now, this week, in an exclusive feature for The Glazine, Head of Taskforces Jim Stevenson explains how the double glazing taskforce came into being, how it operates and why it has been expanded to cover the whole of the UK.
