Rishi Sunak today announced the creation of a new government department for Net Zero as part of a break-up of the former Business Energy & Industrial Strategy (BEIS).

He has appointed Grant Shapps as secretary of state to head the department, which will also cover ‘energy security’ to tackle the threats of rising energy costs.

Other roles of the former BEIS are taken up by a Department for Science, Innovation and Technology, led by Michelle Donelan and a Department for Business and Trade, headed by Kemi Badenoch, former international trade secretary.

Grant Shapps, while in his former role of Business Secretary, had championed the idea that going green could be good value for money and ‘create jobs for generations to come while also protecting our precious planet.”
