NHIC backs call for 5% VAT on renovation
The National Home Improvement Council has joined the call to cut the VAT to 5% for property renovation and repair to stimulate UK businesses after the Brexit referendum.
Executive Director Anna Scothern has written to key government ministers asking that they take positive action to and support businesses for at least the period during the Article 50 negotiations.
She said “NHIC members are optimistic about the future and are keen to learn more about timescales and what Brexit will look like, but in the short term we wanted to draw government’s attention to the independent report produced less than 12 months ago by Experian which demonstrates significant advantages to UK businesses alongside improvements in homeowner and tenants quality of life through a measured reduction in VAT from the current 20% to 5% on all housing renovation and repair works.

NSG Group and Solaria join forces for PV venture
NSG Group, the owner of the Pilkington brand, and Solaria, specialist in PV technology, are entering into a collaboration agreement to manufacture and produce (semi) transparent Building Integrated Photovoltaic (BIPV) solutions.
The group says it chose to collaborate with Solaria due to the company’s robust BIPV technology and manufacturing processes that combine attractive aesthetics, compelling economics, high energy efficiency and design flexibility.
NSG Group is now extending its product line into BIPV, incorporating Solaria’s PowerView™ technologies as part of an OEM relationship.
Establishing a BIPV supply chain signifies that BIPV is commercially ready for mainstream adaptation, say the companies, and the next level will see BIPV being integrated into IGU and glass products for building facades.

At Purplex, the full-service marketing agency for the construction industry, we believe there will be a strong favourable trend in the domestic market towards building products manufactured locally over the next couple of years.
According to the Building Materials and Components Statistic published by the Office for National Statistics, last year electrical wires were both the most imported building products – with a total value of £1.55billion, as well as the most exported, accounting for £684million. One of the main reasons is that products manufactured in Britain are often a higher grade or quality and therefore more expensive than what the local construction market requires or is willing to pay.
