Fire door certified
6th September 2016

THE WINDOW COMPANY (CONTRACTS) has become a Certified Installer of fire doors after joining forces with Door-Stop International to receive installation training from IFC (International Fire Consultants).

The commercial installer has responded to the increase in the number of fire doors being specified by clients, in particular social housing landlords who are addressing risk factors in their housing stock.

Chairman David Thornton said: “Despite the fact that there is no legal requirement for installers to be certified to fit fire doors, we take the view that, because it’s a question of resident safety, it is simply the right thing to do.”

All fire doors, including the Certifire approved Door-Stop doors which The Window Company (Contracts) now installs, need to be certified to BS476 part 22, but there is currently no associated standard for installation. The Window Company (Contracts) says that it would back efforts from across the industry to make training and certification for installers mandatory.

David Thornton added: “Lots of clients are not even aware that fire doors can currently be installed by fitters without specialist training and we would like to see that addressed. All of our fitters who took part in the training reported how useful it was and, even those with many years’ experience, said that they learned important new details.”
