Good call

The announcement this week of another major step towards stamping out the blight of persistent cold callers is not only good news for the millions whose supper/bath/TV/nap or whatever else is so rudely interrupted. It is if anything even better news for the majority in the fenestration industry who must suffer the same sullied public image that this minority are guilty of causing.

Some are real traders simply abusing legal barriers such as TPS registration, some peddle falsehoods such as links with trade bodies or even Government and many are out and out criminal scammers. Their anonymity is not absolute of course – their calls can be traced – but, as the Information Commissioner’s Office told The Glazine this week, consumers are far more likely to report a caller displaying a real number because they are more confident that something can be done. This Week's News

New crackdown launched on cold callers

Another major step in the battle against phone scammers and other nuisance cold callers was taken yesterday with the launch of a new law forcing direct marketing organisations to display their phone numbers.

The move, initiated by Data Protection Minister Baroness Neville Rolfe, was immediately welcomed by the glazing industry as well as consumer bodies.

The Department for Culture, Media and Sport said in a statement that the law will include UK companies using overseas call centres. A spokesperson for the Department also confirmed to The Glazine that the Information Commissioner’s Office will be able to trace calls where a homeowner reports no number has been displayed.

Fabrication set for more growth – report

The UK door and window fabrication market has turned from steady decline over several years to growth since 2013, with prospects of further growth over the next five years, according to a new report from AMA Research which says the market for door and window fabricators increased by around 3% in 2015, following good growth of 5% in the previous year.

Residential windows is the largest sector, driven primarily by replacement demand, though new housing volumes have increased in recent years. However, a strong growth area in the last few years has been the ’home extension’ sector which is driving the growth of bifold doors in particular. Commercial windows and curtain walling have a total share of over 20% of the market and have enjoyed good growth on the back of a recovery in the office construction sector.

Extruders sign up for Fensa ratings

Most UK PVC-U system houses have now opted in to Fensa Window & Doorset Energy Ratings, with many doing so at the FIT Show where the organisation says there was a positive response from all sectors of the replacement glazing sector.

BFRC director Toby Blamey said: “This is an excellent result for the new Fensa window & doorset energy ratings,” commented.  “We believed that this scheme would prove popular but we underestimated the levels of interest not just from installers but from the whole industry.”

Fensa Window & Doorset Energy Ratings are free for Fensa certified installers that are supplied by registered.

A big thank you from
GM Fundraising

The GM Fundraising team has once again been overwhelmed by the industry support during FIT 2016, where the charity raised a total of £10,090 to support the children and families of Hope House.

The GM Fundraising stand which was kindly donated by FIT Show Matthew and Paul being part of the upcoming Border2Border team gave the team a chance to showcase what they do and where the money goes.  The ‘Beat the Pro’ challenge proved a popular attraction and the winner, Brad Guant from RAM Tracking, will shortly be heading off for a weekend in Amsterdam as his prize for cycling 531.04m in 30 seconds.

From:
Gareth Mobley,
CEO,
Solidor & Residor

The industry is not taking security as seriously as homeowners.

Research by Manchester University for Solidor reveals that security is the most important consideration when homeowners buy external doors. Brisant Secure’s recent large sample research for its Domestic Door Security Report quantifies it, finding that 85% of homeowners say security is the most important factor when buying a composite door.

So, why is the industry still selling composite doors that aren’t secure? Why are some composite door manufacturers distracting us with ‘comparison’ reports that compare everything but the security homeowners want above all? No one can say homeowners are wrong to want doors that prevent burglars breaking in. In 74% of burglaries, intruders gain entry through the door (Source: ONS).
