Colour match

First it was a niche, then a speciality, then a sector. And now coloured PVC-U profile can safely earn the title of mainstream with the news that one system house has now matched its standard white output with coloured.

It is fitting that it should be Deceuninck that is claiming the crown because, while it is not the biggest player in the field, it has probably shouted louder and longer on the subject than any other. Also, as Rob McGlennon was quick to point out, the achievement is as much about stock accessibility and lead times as range or spec. Read Story

Pilkington sells
£5m Bristol site to Cornwall Glass

Cornwall Glass subsidiary Mackenzie Glass has this week announced the acquisition of the £5million-sales Pilkington Bristol from the NSG Group for an undisclosed sum.

The deal, expected to be completed next month, makes Bristol the third site to be sold by the Group this year, following the purchase of Barnsley and Cumbernauld in March to Press Glass UK subsidiary Glass Systems Group. It is also the second acquisition by Cornwall Glass since it bought LW Architectural soon after.

The sale is also expected to include Bristol’s 46 employees, following the completion of a statutory consultation period.

Deceuninck hits
50/50 colour

Deceuninck is claiming a UK first with the news that production of coloured PVC-U profile has now overtaken white.

The announcement was made during a media tour when MD Rob McGlennon told trade editors that output from its Calne factory is now 51% colour, adding that the company’s two biggest customers are themselves past the 50% mark.

He added: "The demand is there, as an industry we just need to meet it, which means delivering quality colour products, without extended delivery times.”

‘Skills gap a threat …Brexit a bump in the road’

The skills gap represents the major challenge for the glass processing and glazing sectors as increasing automation of process and generational change creates a deficit in traditional skills. The warning came at an industry forum, organised by Bohle to discuss the key issues shaping the glass processing and glazing sector.

1st Glass & Mirror’s David Simberg, warned that quality remained a challenge for the industry because of the erosion of traditional skills sets as a generation of glass processors moved out of the industry. This was echoed by Vince McDonnell, Glass Designs, who attributed the decline to the increasing automation of process. He argued the focus on volume production had accelerated this trend.

Paul Rogers, Express Glazing, added: “We need a consistent and standardised training programme, raising the skills set right across the industry. This would give businesses the confidence to invest because everyone is investing - you aren’t simply training people for someone else”.

Adhesives acquisition

US-based HB Fuller yesterday (Oct 23) announced the $1,575million acquisition of Royal Adhesives and Sealants, parent company of insulating glass adhesives manufacturer Kommerling Chemische Fabrik Gmbh including its operations in Pirmasens, Germany.

Royal Adhesives & Sealants CEO, Ted Clark said of the move: “This is an exciting step for Royal and our network of brands. Combining these two businesses creates a more capable anddynamic company for our customers and employees. We complement each other, selling in adjacent markets with very little customer overlap, and that presents an interesting number of growth opportunities.

“We offer different technologies, expertise and capabilities. Yet, we share the same passion for solving product development challenges by discovering and applying innovations in adhesive technology.” The acquisition expands H.B.
