The long and the
short of it

There is probably little to add at this stage to what has already been said about the recent moves at the GGF except to record its announcement today of a number of interim appointments, including one role which it seems has attracted a ‘long term’ and a ‘short term’ interim incumbent. Read Story

Elsewhere, it may sound at first glance like a typical silly season story that the general public cannot make their minds up about what to call bi-folds, but if 34,000 consumers every month are googling up the wrong tree, then it suddenly becomes a rather more serious matter of potentially very many missed opportunities. Then again, we should all be grateful that the original, cumbersome title of ‘Folding Sliding Doors’ seems to have been relegated to history. Read Story

It is also heartening to see that the GGF has launched a new Lifetime Achievement Award, to be presented as part of the G17 Awards ceremony in November. Just as was noted when the title was added to the Oscars some years ago, it is often the long-term achievers who make the greatest mark on history so we look forward to seeing what deserving names will emerge to be honoured. GGF appoints Interim Directors

The GGF today announced a number of senior management changes in the light of recent personnel departures, including two separate interim Chief Executives of its commercial arm, the Helix Group, to serve in two different time periods.

It says that Phil Pluck, CEO of the GGF has now been appointed Interim CEO of the GGF Group. Former GGF CEO Brian Baker has been appointed ‘short term Interim CEO’ of Helix Group, probably until early to mid-September, after which Kevin Buckley becomes ‘longer term Interim CEO’ of Helix Group for approximately six months. Also, Tony Morgan has been appointed Interim Finance Director.

It’s a bi-fold …or is it?

Nearly two thirds of all consumers don’t know that a bi-fold is called a bi-fold, according to a survey published today.
Concertina, sliding, folding track, accordion …even zig zag are just a few of the names people came up with when asked to identify the style from a photo.

The matter becomes far less funny however when the research reveals that over 34,000 homeowners a month make unsuccessful searches because of the confusion – every one a possible missed sales opportunity.

Researchers for aluminium door, window and blind manufacturer Origin asked 500 members of the public to look at a picture and name the doors illustrated and found that only 36% described the doors as bi-folds.

Property listings
down again

Estate agent property listings have fallen for the second consecutive month since the General Election, down 1.6% in July after a drop of 1.9% in June, according to the latest Property Supply Index compiled by HouseSimple.com.

Sellers held off putting their properties on the market before the Genetral Election, but the psot-election rush never happened as a narrow Tory victory combined with Brexit fears and cooling prices has left sellers in limbo.

Ironically, of the 100 towns and cities analysed, more areas actually saw an increase in property supply in July compared to June, even though supply was down across the UK as a whole. Biggest drops were Newquay (30%) and King’s Lynn (25.6%), while Dundee saw listings almost double in July, up 96.9%.

Flush

Residence Collection today announced first half sales are up 20% year-on-year against an overall market said to be down by 3 – 5% in the same period.

Much of the growth for Residence fabricators’ and installers’ has been with R9, the system designed to meet the demands of planners for conservation areas, listed buildings, heritage and period properties as well as self-build. However, the company says it is also starting fabricators up on only R7, the flush inside and out system, which has recently had its marketing launch.

Lifetime award unveiled

Another high-point of the G-Awards was announced today by the GGF which has initiated a Lifetime Achievement Award to be presented at the G17 Awards Gala Dinner on November 17 at the London Hilton on Park Lane.

The organisation, which is launching the Award as part of its 40th anniversary, stresses that it is not exclusive to its members but is open for entries from or on behalf of anyone who has worked most of their life in the glass & glazing industry and ‘can clearly show a history of achievement in the industry and some examples of their exceptional work.’
