Big numbers

There were quite a few £million signs floating around this week, both on the credit and debit side of the news. Firstly, on the plus side, we hear of multi-million pound investments by both Pilks and aluplast which are both putting big numbers into racking up their respective production capacities.

Then the numbers turn negative with yet another episode in the ongoing saga that is Safestyle, in this case with the personal bankruptcy of one of its co-founders following yet another bitter legal battle. Read story

More big numbers come elsewhere this week with the news that the manufacturing assets of GBW Panels, said to be up to 100,000 door panels a year, have been acquired by the Customade Group, which will move production to its existing Virtuoso Doors facility. Read Story

Safestyle co-founder Ross declared bankrupt

John Ross, the man who founded Safestyle UK along with Mitu Misra, has been declared bankrupt after being made to pay several million in costs from a failed court action against his former business partner.

Earlier this year, Mr Ross had taken Mr Misra to court claiming he owed him nearly £27million after reneging on a deal over Safestyle shares. It was also revealed that he had turned down a £1million settlement offer from Mr Misra at an earlier stage in the litigation.

Customade acquires GBW manufacturing assets

The manufacturing assets of Worcester-based GBW Panels, which was placed into administration last month, has been acquired by Customade Group, which will immediately move all panel production to its existing Virtuoso Doors facility in the North East.

All existing GBW panel customers have been assured continuity of supply by the new owners. Customade CEO David Leng said in a statement: “Acquiring an extensive range of assets to support growth in our panel sales is a great opportunity and we welcome any previous GBW customers to come and trade with our group.”

Pilkington invests £3million in structural glazing growth

Pilkington United Kingdom has invested more than £3 million in new technology to increase its capacity for its Pilkington Planar structural glazing system as well as increasing the size capability of its toughened products.

The manufacturer has invested in a new toughening furnace, an increased capability heat soak oven, and a glass measuring device. The toughening furnace, due to be operational by next month, will be located at the Pilkington Architectural site in St Helens.

Aluplast has announced a multi-million-pound investment programme that it says will more than double its extrusion and warehousing capacity in Europe, including the development of a 13 hectare site in Poland and the doubling of capacity at its HQ in Germany.
