Market Gets More Wobbles
With the housing market suffering a slight dip and election fever in full swing, consumer spending has suddenly ground to a halt. A glut of special offers on goods from defunct retail chains Courts, Allders and Index, and half price Rovers on garage forecourts of every town in the country, makes it even less likely that homeowners will be splashing out on 'replacement replacement' windows if their replacements aren't actually falling to bits. 'Indeed, if the new generation of replacement windows are technically so good then the rate of replacements of replacements may actually decline', says Robert Palmer this week.

Veka Advert

So, no surprise then, that after 20 years in the market, one of the first companies to enter the UK PVC-U window market - Schüco - is withdrawing from the PVC market to concentrate on its aluminium and steel systems. And no surprise either that Deceuninck cites the UK as 'a cause for concern' in reporting static volumes in the first quarter of this year. On the plus side, Deceuninck has raised its expectations on the full year, in anticipation of the continued success of the US market, which is flying, and the returns expected from the successful rollout of zendow throughout Europe. In another example of repositioning, Veka has flogged off its ancillary business, Vekatrim, to Celuform.

Synseal Tie Bolt

On a lighter note, with election fever in full heat, we thought it timely to publish a rather amusing slogan which is being used by a Gloucester window and conservatory company, which you will find at the top of the news page here.

Finally, congratulations to Paula Radcliffe for a third consecutive win in the world's greatest Marathon. Her Number One was well deserved (good job it wasn't a Number Two!!). Sorry, couldn't resist that one.
