Mixed News from The Glass Sector
Mixed results from the glass sector this week, with only 7 weeks to go before the Glass Processing & Technology Show. Pilkington has announced, in its annual trading update, that it expects to be able to announce pre-tax profits up by 15%. However, these are coming mainly from good results from the automotive sector, combined with lower interest rates and increased cost efficiency. The Building Products division is only 'holding up' according to chief exec Stuart Chambers.

Providing proof of a healthy downstream glass processing market meanwhile, glass machinery giants Bystronic and Armatec, both part of the Conzzeta Group, has announced volumes up 10.6% and an operating margin more than trebled from last year. In the architectural aluminium market, Technal has doubled its capacity by moving into a new HQ near Wakefield, and announces aggressive expansion plans in the UK and Ireland. However, we also hear of the demise of Therm Tempered, which apparently closed its doors last Thursday, with debts of £1.6m.

DuPont and City of Dongying, China, Open Negotiations Concerning New Titanium Dioxide Plant
DuPont and the city of Dongying, Shandong province, the People's Republic of China (PRC), have begun talks that could lead to construction of a world-class titanium dioxide (TiO2) plant in the city's Economic Development Zone. TiO2 is a white pigment widely used in the coatings, plastics and paper industries.

OFT Fines Scottish and North East Roofing Contractors for Price-fixing
Ten roofing contractors have been found by the OFT to have agreed to fix the prices of, and in some cases to share markets for, flat roofing services in the north east of England and in Scotland through collusive tendering. They have been fined nearly £830,000 in total (reduced to nearly £560,000 by leniency).
