The 'shrink to grow' policy recognises that this country is still a good market, but at the same time a little bit of prudent cost control can't be a bad idea. While no job losses are envisaged - on the contrary, Rehau will be recruiting in certain areas - the group has recognised that the current Slough HQ is bigger than it needs to be and will be seeking smaller premises in Slough, while expanding its base in Manchester. As part of the process, Wolfgang Korner has been appointed as overall head of Rehau's UK window business.

This is balance sheet planning at its best: sensible decisions based on the real-time financial condition of the company in a specific market. A small dip in the economy is enough to flush out firms who have their finger somewhere other than on the pulse, and those companies who are making adjustments now will not be taken by surprise when the downturn comes. Bury your head in the sand at your peril!

Another way for window companies to stay ahead of the game has - for the last 25 years anyway - involved exhibiting at, or at least attending, Glassex. This year, the Seminar Programme - a relatively recent addition to the show - seems set to excel itself by not simply responding to market needs but by pre-empting them. Details below.
