Battening Down the Hatches
Some signs are beginning to creep in of PVC-U systems companies battening down the hatches in preparation for a fairly rough ride in the next few months. Oil, transport and raw material costs, as well as unfavourable exchange rates, continue to dent the profitability of UK companies or subsidiaries. This week Deceuninck has released its 2004 results, in which it talks of streamlining operations in the UK at the same time as rolling out new products (eg Zendow). Elsewhere, Jim Rawson, chairman of the Epwin Group has warned staff to expect to tighten their belts this year in the latest issue of the group's newsletter, the Grapevine (a PDF file which can be downloaded here).

As the year marches inextricably onwards, we are also being reminded of some events which are looming on the horizon. The Industry Awards night, this year called 'G 05' has been announced as June 10th at the NEC Metropole, so anyone wanting to enter should start thinking about it now. Prior to that, of course, we have Glassex, this year in its 25th year, and now less than 8 weeks away! Also, you can now register to attend the second outing of GP&T, which is May 17-19th at the NEC. Finally, Bau began yesterday in Munich, in case any of you fancy a dash over to Bavaria (where apparently snow conditions are perfect for skiing at the moment...).
