Capital punishment

There can hardly be anyone who is deeply in love with the pre-pack arrangement for resuscitating a company, except of course for those carrying it out. But the action by Veka – and especially with its public statement – is unprecedented in recent times. The company has not only had the courage to declare its intentions but to go further in saying it will now focus on its ‘TRUSTED fabricators’ (their capitals, not ours), and judging by the social media meltdown that followed the news of the sale, the system supplier has earned ample applause for its declaration. For all the furore that surrounds the case, it must be remembered that this is the third week in succession we have had to report such occurrences, following the collapse of Sash into administration last week and the bail-out of Everest before that.

Some of the more superstitious in the industry might note that all bad news comes in threes. But then some of the more sceptical might easily reply that three might not be the end of it.

Superstitious or otherwise, we hope there is something in this week’s issue for everyone.

Leng leads rebirth of Customade but drops
two sites

Customade Group today confirmed that ‘the majority’ of the group and its brands had been bought out of administration by a private equity fund to form a new group headed by CEO David Leng.

The new group will continue to operate with Virtuoso Doors, Polyframe Norwich, Polyframe Stonehouse, REAL Aluminium, Atlas, Fineline Aluminium and the Stevenswood trade counter chain.

Veka shuns new Customade for
‘TRUSTED’ fabs

Veka has reacted to the news of the Customade bail-out with the immediate announcement that it will not trade with the new group but instead focus on its ‘TRUSTED’ fabricator customers.

The manufacturer is one of the major PVC-U systems suppliers to the group, which boasted uniquely offering frames from five systems including Veka and its Halo brand, as well as being the sole PVC-U system in all of Customade’s Stevenswood trade counters throughout the north.

The Glass and Glazing Federation has given its backing to the new home improvement forum set up by The National Home Improvement Council.

The NHIC Strategic Forum will bring together many of the major organisations representing the home improvement sector to discuss the key issues affecting the sector as the industry moves out of lockdown during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Construction near half in locked-down May

The value of construction contract awards fell by nearly half in May as lockdown fear took its toll, according to the latest figures from Barbour ABI.

Total value was £2.4 billion based on a three-month rolling average, a decrease of 45.9% on April and 52.3% lower than May 2019. Contract awards numbers in May decreased by 16.2% to 263, approximately 73.8% below the recent high point of 1,003 recorded for February 2020.
