All change

If anyone needed waking up out of their post-Easter torpor, today’s news alone should have done the trick with not only Theresa May’s announcement of a General Election on June 8 but also two more industry acquisitions.

In the era of Brexit and Trump no one dare begin to guess what the snap election will hold in store for the industry, let alone the country. However, the Cornwall Glass move especially represents yet another major consolidation in a series that is creating unprecedented changes to landscape of the industry …and we repeat, yet again, there is still talk of more to come.

Elsewhere, we hear that, if you really want to impress the homeowner, what you need to do is turn up on time and be polite, according to a new poll showing that the basic courtesies and communication skills are still valued by homeowners even if they are a little remote from a few of our industry stereotypes. A far simpler message comes from another survey however – that consumers are bucking the Brexit gloom by planning more major home improvements in the next few months.

And finally, you might not expect a ballet dancer turning up to do your home improvements though, as our letter-writer points out, the powers-that-be feel they are more deserving of a UK visa than the EU workers who are widely recognised as playing a vital role in getting our country building again. Although, on the plus side, they might turn up on time.

Cornwall Glass gains South East and multi-lam’ with LW acquisition

Cornwall Glass has announced the acquisition of £4million-sales Middlesex-based LW Architectural Glass, giving the group a greater reach across southern England and a multi-laminate capability as well as a turnover approaching £20million from 15 locations.

In addition to its lamination facility, the purchase of the 50,000 sq ft manufacturing centre also gives Cornwall Glass two new heat soak ovens, a new toughening plant – the fourth within the group – alongside a spray booth, straight-line edgers and new CNC machinery.

Cornwall Glass Director, Mark Mitchell, said: “It’s a very important strategic acquisition for us, giving Cornwall Glass a geographical presence in London – something which we have been considering for a number of years – but also additional manufacturing capacity.

‘Totally understated’
UK Window Systems acquired by external investors

Midlands trade fabricator UK Window Systems today announced its acquisition by external investors and the introduction of a new management team with a plan to develop a business that has been ‘totally understated’ with little effort in sales or marketing.

Newly-appointed MD Michael Armstrong told the Glazine “The company has been fairly quiet on publicity and marketing. It makes a good product but has never really celebrated the fact.”

Alongside him, Gary Beech, one of the founding partners in the company in 2003, remains in the business as Operations Director. The pair have also been joined by former Hallmark Panels & Doors Sales Director Nick Holloway.

Stoke-based UK Window Systems fabricates 300-350 frames a week, using the Rehau, Residence and Kömmerling systems, along with products from Ultraframe, Synseal, Kestrel, Fab & Fix and Hurst. Its output is over 90% to trade, with customers mostly between Birmingham and Manchester but, said the MD, it is now aiming to look further afield.

Home improvement on the increase – survey

The number of households planning major home improvements has risen dramatically since last year, according to figures released yesterday.

Nearly 60% of UK homeowners are planning projects with a combined value of over £50billion in the next six months – 12% up on the same time last year.

The optimistic forecast comes in the Velux 2017 Home Improvement survey, which also reveals that, while the planned average spend in the time is £4,870, one in six improvers (16%) are aiming to invest over £10,000 on their homes.

Praise for pre-emptive chrome elimination

Architectural aluminium systems manufacturer Kawneer has put a six-figure investment into the elimination of chrome from its production pre-treatment ahead of the official ban due to come into force in September.

Kawneer had used chrome as a typical anti-corrosion coating prior to powder coating for 25 years but the company has reviewed this practice in light of a European Regulation on Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemicals (REACH) ban.

The company invested in new and improved production processes including two new de-mineralisation units, stainless steel lined tanks, laboratory equipment, dedicated storage area for test panels and customer viewing platform.

On-time tradesmen top the popularity poll

Tradesmen who turn up on time have been voted top of a poll of homeowners’ favourite qualities, according to a survey by home services marketplace Plentific.

Punctuality is closely followed by politeness and talking customers through a project, while more predictable favourites such as a clean-looking van and branded, uniformed workers came far lower down the list.

According to the survey, 84% of those polled were more like to hire a punctual tradesman; 83% looked for one who had a polite manner and responded to communications and 81% favoured one who was willing to talk them through the process of a project.

We Have Email

From: Duncan Wietscher, Director,
Newview Windows & Conservatories

A new report from the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) has revealed that should the UK lose access to the EU single market, the UK construction industry could lose almost 200,000 EU workers post-Brexit. It warns that failure to secure access to the single market could place the UK’s predicted £500 billion infrastructure pipeline under threat.

It is in our best interests to make a success of Brexit and secure the best trade deals we can but a loss of access to the single market has the potential to impact in the short term, making it harder for our cities to compete on a global stage, and negatively impacting the economy.

We desperately need to secure access to the single market or put alternative plans in place to safeguard the future of construction and our country.
