Love them or
hate them?
The hard-sell boys (and girls) in this business must be among the most unloved souls on the planet, not least in the eyes of the rest of the industry who are still struggling to escape the toxic tag of ‘double-glazing salesmen’. So it will warm their hearts – if such hearts can be warmed – to find they have at least one friend among our higher echelons in the form of Deceuninck MD Roy Frost.
|
Well, perhaps ‘friend’ is too strong a word but in his letter this week he does make a case for their defence and not only in the obvious way that they shift some product. He puts an interesting hypothesis that, in pitches where they come out empty handed, the homeowner may be appetised enough to seek a more local quote – a bit like some inverse law of the jungle where the hyena stalks the prey then the lions follow on. Read Email
Any installers out there care to share some testimony on this? We’d love to hear from you.
Meanwhile, whether you see yourself as a hyena, lion or any other animal analogy, we hope you find some flesh on the bones of this week’s issue.

GGF replies to ‘derogatory comments’
The GGF has replied angrily to comments on a social media site about the Federation and its members.
In a statement, the Federation says:
“The most recent comment appeared on Double Glazing Blogger’s blog by Anthony Jones, Chairman of National Federation of Glaziers who incorrectly stated that some GGF Members had brought “consumer biased laws” upon the industry. In addition, Jones also accused the GGF of being “afraid to do anything about dishonest practices”, questioned the democracy of the GGF and attacked the GGF’s Consumer Code of Practice.”

Heavier H&S fines
welcomed
Tough new guidelines for
punishing companies for health
& safety offences in England
and Wales – potentially with
much higher fines or even prison
– have been welcomed by the
British Safety Council as
‘long overdue’.
From this month, for the first
time, the courts will be required
to follow comprehensive sentencing
guidelines for determining fines,
based on three key factors of the
degree of harm done, the
culpability of the offender and the
turnover of the offending
organisation.

GGF raises fears over fire safety changes
The Glass and Glazing Federation is continuing to raise concerns over the Government’s decision to moves responsibility for fire and rescue to the Home Office.
The change is said to “support a radical transformation of how the police, fire & rescue services work together.” From 1 April 2016 staff working on national fire policy will also transfer across from the Department of Communities and Local Government (DCLG).

Price pressure
keeps fittings growth low
The market for door and window
fittings increased by around 2% in
2015, following similar annual
growth rates in 2013 and 2014, with
a recovery in volumes partially
offset by downward pressure on
prices and margins, according to a
new report from AMA Research.
The market is also very fragmented
in terms of product range,
specification standards and routes
to market, with product
applications ranging from high
specification commercial
applications to retro-fit
traditional style fittings.

From:
Roy Frost,
MD,
Deceuninck UK
Changes at a national direct
sell company or a set of bad
results often prompt people to
attribute their troubles to a tired
business model that no longer
works.
But be careful what you wish for?
The industry has never been keen on
the hard sell. And there’s
never been a shortage of unhappy
homeowners who were less than
impressed with the nationals’
methods.

houses look like in other

with the look and feel of a
country, and how architecture and
the buildings people live in vary
across Europe.
They’re very different. So
different you could drop anyone of
us somewhere in Germany, and
without seeing signs or hearing
anyone speak, you’d know
fairly well you were in Germany
just by looking at the
buildings.
