Boom or gloom
We learned from Kipling’s ‘Four blind men and the elephant’ that one single thing may seem completely different from opposing perspectives and it looks that way this week with statistical observations on the current state of UK housing and housebuilding. So, rather than try to add to the confusion by comparing and contrasting them, we present each report separately to let you, our readers, decide whether the news is good or bad for our industry.
At least, things are looking far cheerier for specialist elderly housing so you could say it may eventually be good news for all of us lucky enough to live that long. Read story here
Also, in two separate stories from Pilkington, we learn of the glass company’s role in a unique energy-generating ‘smart house’ (Read story here) and Commercial Director Andy McDowell’s view that the end of the zero-carbon obligation may demotivate future innovation. Read story here
On a lighter note but potentially worth a bob or two, especially to many sole traders and smaller businesses: you may think the taxman is taking the shirt off your back but perhaps you could be getting the tax back on all your workwear. Read story here
And finally, The Glazine is now beginning its two-week summer break so we look forward to greeting you again on Tuesday, Aug 25th.
Do enjoy this week’s issue.

This Week's News
Social housing hardest hit in ongoing construction decline
Building in the UK is still not shaking out of its post-election gloom, largely due to a ‘steep decline’ in social housing project starts according to industry analyst Glenigan. The underlying value of construction starts fell by 27% year on year in the quarter to July.
The news was better in private housing, where an 8% year on year drop in starts was modest enough to keep the sector in growth for 2015 so far.

House prices stabilising – Nationwide
“UK house prices increased by 0.4% in July, and as a result the annual pace of house price growth edged up to 3.5% from 3.3% in June, according to figures from the Nationwide.
Robert Gardner, Nationwide's Chief Economist, said: “After moderating over the past twelve months, there are tentative signs that annual house price growth may be stabilising close to the pace of earnings growth, which has historically been around 4%.

Retirement homes boost responds to ‘chronic undersupply’
More retirement homes were registered to be built in the UK in the first six months of this year than the whole of the previous year, according to new figures released by NHBC.

Will zero-carbon decision stifle green innovation?
The Government’s decision to lift the zero-carbon housing standard may have been widely welcomed in the industry but Pilkington UK Commercial Director Andy McDowell warns there is a risk it could slow the pace of innovation in energy saving in glazing and construction.
In a statement issued today, he said: “Previous regulations have strongly driven our industry towards higher energy performance levels, something that was unlikely to have been adopted otherwise.
