Cameron and Miliband go head to head on housing

Both Conservatives and Labour brought housing to the forefront of the election battle this week with two very big but very different pledges.

Labour has gone a step further than its 2010 Manifesto by committing itself to a clear target of 200,000 new homes a year by 2020 with “First priority for local first-time buyers,” while the Tories have raised a ghost of the Thatcher years by promising not only to extend the right-to-buy scheme to 1.3 million housing association tenants in England but also to build an extra 400,000 homes funded by sales of council houses.

Designed to court working class voters who have abandoned his party for the anti-EU UK Independence party (UKIP) and wavering supporters of the opposition Labour Party, Cameron’s pledge represents a shift towards a more positive campaign.

With just over three weeks before what is shaping up to be Britain's closest election since the 1970s, he is under pressure to put clear water between his party and Labour in opinion polls, most of which have the two neck-and-neck.

First to comment was the Federation of Master Builders, whose Chief Executive Brian Berry said: “Although the Labour Party’s 2010 manifesto placed a clear emphasis on the importance of increasing home ownership and providing better, more affordable housing, this manifesto explicitly recognises that building more homes is the only route to achieving this.

He added: “I am particularly pleased to see the importance of small house builders being recognised – more active SME house builders will guarantee a healthier and more diverse house building market. Labour have committed to improving the flow of finance to small house builders which is crucial to achieving this.”

Either way, should the party that gets into Downing Street next month fulfil their pledges, the current upturn in the fenestration sector looks set to continue.

I hope you enjoy this week’s issue.

Federation welcomes Doc Q ‘at last’

The Door & Hardware Federation (DHF) has welcomed the publication of the long-awaited Document Q security regulations, following a long campaign alongside SBD for security to be included in Building Regs.

The new Approved Document, due to take effect in October applying to all dwellings in England, states that doors and windows will meet the new security requirements if they can resist physical attack by a casual or opportunist burglar. To do this they must be both robust and be fitted with appropriate hardware.

Inflation flat in year to March

Inflation was unchanged in the year to March, according to figures from the Office for National Statistics, which show falls in the price of clothing and gas prices produced the largest downward contributions on the rate.

These were offset by a rise in the price of motor fuels and smaller upward contributions from a variety of other products such as food.
