Inflation at lowest rate for 15 years

Short lived it may be, but today saw a drop in the rate of inflation to 0.5% for December, down from 1% in November, the lowest rate for 15 years. The ONS said the main contributions to the fall came from the December 2013 gas and electricity price rises falling out of the inflation calculation and the continuing drop in motor fuel prices. Read more here.

We also have a scathing response to today’s government announcement on apprenticeship funding reforms from the Federation of Master Builders, who state  “Today’s announcement by the Skills Minister offers no clarity or reassurance regarding the future of apprenticeship funding. Despite the business community – across many sectors – repeatedly warning government of the potential impact of their proposed reforms on the desire and ability of SMEs to train apprentices, we have been told that giving employers direct control of apprenticeship funding remains a non-negotiable part of the reforms.”  Read the rest here.

We also have news of the progress made by the GGF on the issue of Universal Credit through their dialogue with the Department of Works and Pensions here.

This Week's News

Inflation falls to lowest level in 15 years

Inflation fell last month to 0.5%, down from 1% in November, latest figures have shown. The Consumer Prices Index (CPI) is now at its lowest level for 15 years.

The Office for National Statistics said the main contributions to the fall came from the December 2013 gas and electricity price rises falling out of the inflation calculation and the continuing drop in motor fuel prices.
Greg Lowson, President of Birmingham Chamber of Commerce said: “Today’s figure is well below the Bank of England’s 2% target and while this is positive news, it is a ‘flash in the pan’ situation. We do not anticipate that this will be a sustained drop and expect prices to increase as fuel costs rise again.

“The fall is primarily because of a reduction in fuel, gas and electricity prices.  A drop in the price of crude oil has affected other inflation indicators such as the Producer Price Index which saw a fall in the overall costs of manufacturing by 0.8% in the year to December.”
The fall means that a basket of goods and services that cost £100.00 in December 2013 would have cost £100.50 in December 2014. This is the joint lowest 12-month rate on record. The CPI 12-month rate was previously 0.5% in May 2000.

GGF Pleased With Progress On Universal Credit Developments

Over the last 12 months, the GGF has been working steadily with the Department of Work and Pensions (DWP) on Universal Credit and the benefits it brings to employers. Following these ongoing discussions, DWP has released news of two key developments to inform employers understand Universal Credit and to take full advantage of its benefits.

Nigel Rees, GGF Group Chief Executive raised the issue of; ensuring companies are well informed of the benefits of Universal Credit with Lord Freud, Minister for Welfare Reform, at a Roundtable Discussion in early November 2014.

It was mentioned that online guidance documents were being developed and the GGF is pleased that the information is now available online.

Nigel Rees, GGF Group Chief Executive commented “We were pleased to take part in the roundtable discussion with Lord Freud last November. As Universal Credit expands across the UK in 2015, an increasing number of businesses will come into contact with those on Universal Credit and this online information and toolkit will help employers get information of this new benefit.”

Construction apprenticeships doomed under government proposals

The future of the construction industry hangs in the balance following today’s government announcement on apprenticeship funding reforms, according to the Federation of Master Builders (FMB).

Brian Berry, Chief Executive of the FMB, said: “Today’s announcement by the Skills Minister offers no clarity or reassurance regarding the future of apprenticeship funding. Despite the business community – across many sectors – repeatedly warning government of the potential impact of their proposed reforms on the desire and ability of SMEs to train apprentices, we have been told that giving employers direct control of apprenticeship funding remains a non-negotiable part of the reforms.”

Berry continued: “We have waited eight months for the government response to their Spring 2014 consultation and have today been presented with two sides of A4 which only serve to fuel our fears about the ability of SME construction firms to train apprentices. If SME firms – particularly micro-firms – are asked to pay for apprenticeship training up front it will have a negative impact on cash flow and increase levels of bureaucracy no matter how simple the system is.”

UK Government unveils its updated £127 billion Construction pipeline

The Government have recently released their latest update of the £127 billion construction pipeline, rising in value by 10 per cent over the last six months, according to the latest official figures.

The pipeline, is provided by Barbour ABI and is designed to help businesses prepare for planned government-spending streams. Projects on the list include HS2, an £11 billion nuclear waste management facility and over £12 billion on education construction across the UK.

Simon Mahoney, Managing Director of Barbour ABI stated “The Government is construction’s single largest client, providing over 40% of annual spend in the UK, therefore it’s imperative that this publicly funded money is accessible and outlined clearly, allowing businesses to plan around the many thousands of projects within the construction pipeline. Here at Barbour ABI, we collect and collate the pipeline on behalf of the Government, helping to keep the industry up to date with the many developments.”

Media 10 buys Timber Expo

Exhibition Organiser Media 10 has today announced the acquisition of dedicated event for timber construction, Timber Expo.

Trustmark Hit Record Numbers For 2014

TrustMark, the Government endorsed quality mark for tradesmen, announced today that it has recorded its highest number of tradesmen details displayed on its website.  More than 7.2 million search results were provided to homeowners who used TrustMark’s website and telephone helpline to find expert tradesmen to carry out work on their homes or gardens during 2014, an increase of 38% compared to the same period in 2013.

October and November saw an increase in trades for expert roofers (70%), builders (67%), plumbers and heating engineers (61%) and electricians (41%), which together represent 47% of all the searches across the trades during 2014.  Autumn is typically the time of year that homeowners prepare their homes for the arctic months ahead and would have contributed significantly to these growths.

There were a number of other highly sought after trades who have equally seen a sharp rise during 2014 and these include home adaptations for the elderly and disabled (129%), carpenters and joiners (55%) and painters and decorators (51%), window installers and glaziers (44%) plasterers and renderers (42%) and garden landscapers (40%).

Have the Usain Bolt of aluminium lead times arrived?

A significant investment by a bi-fold specialist means it can now offer some of the fastest leads times on aluminium the industry has ever seen, it is claimed.

TWR Bi-fold’s purchase and build of a state-of-the-art in-house powder coating and paint spraying facility has seen the company now able to offer a six day turnaround on aluminium products such as bi-folds, wide span patio doors, vertical slider and many others in any RAL colour, excluding the Sensations Range and dual-colour, in contrast to many other suppliers that only offer this turnaround only on grey, white and black.

Managing director of TWR Bi-folds, Terry Richardson, comments: “Unfortunately many installers have become used to slow leads times on aluminium and the industry has become complacent in dealing with the issue. It is a bold statement we’ve made but with many other suppliers only offering grey, black and white we are confident it can be achieved.

“We’ve invested in this facility in order to try to solve this solution and offer faster leads times so installers can streamline their own businesses and turn around jobs faster. The in-house powder coating facility means not only can we offer quality aluminium bi-folds at Usain Bolt fast lead-times; but at competitive prices too.”
