A week of Hot Awards and Hot-ish News
Two very interesting developments this week - well, actually they were both announced just after we transmitted last week's issue, so while not exactly breaking news, they are worth flagging up nonetheless. Firstly, Bowater Group management has signed a deal worth £52m which gives venture capital group 3i a majority stake. On the surface this appears to be a little bit like changing banks, since 3i bought the equity from Bowater's previous investors in what is described as a 'secondary buyout'.

The first Glass Processing Days (GPD) China seminar was held recently in Peking, China. The aim of this technical seminar was to offer the latest technology and market information to the Chinese glass industry. GPD China 2004 was organised by Kyro Group’s Glaston Technologies. The event attracted almost 200 glass processors from China and its neighbouring countries.

However, it is never bad news to have one of the world's leading equity companies on your team, and it remains to be seen what, if anything, will change. Another major investment story is the acquisition of Welsh composite door firm Sentinel by US company Therm-Tru (now owned by Fortune Brands). This makes Fortune Brands look like another Masco in the making, with stated expansion aims in the UK and Europe and interests in the kitchen and bathroom as well as door and window markets.

The G 04 Awards took place at the ICC in Birmingham on Friday where Jack Dee presented 10 worthy winners with trophies in categories ranging from Glass Company of the Year to Energy Efficiency Initiative. Judging from the feedback on the night and in the subsequent e-mails and messages a good night was had by all.
