Photovoltaics Come of Age
We have always been great fans of photovoltaics at The Gl@zine, which is why we have always had a side channel dedicated just to this market sector. We were therefore ecstatic to see major companies such as Ubbink launching its 'plug in and go' solar roof panels at Interbuild last month. We were also not that surprised to read, in a market report this week from the organisers of Glasstec (see below), that photovoltaics will enjoy 35% growth in 2004.

Photovoltaics are about to come of age. At a star studded event last week at the Royal Opera House, leading architects were treated to a presentation of the very latest in solar electric glass. Romag has teamed up with BP Solar to offer PowerGlaz, a laminated glass that incorporates BP Solar photovoltaic cells.

Deceuninck Advert

At the same event, Marley Roofing launched its solar-powered roof tiles, which are aimed at the domestic market. The tiles are made of Romag's laminated glass and also incorporate BP Solar cells.

Less good news for the sharp end of the replacement window market: the OFT has finally produced a (rather turgid) 123 page report on doorstep selling, a market worth around £2bn a year, by far the largest chunk of which is accounted for by double glazing and conservatories. Not to be underestimated, as OFT recommendations have a nasty habit of becoming enshrined in law.

For example, and forgive me if I enjoy this one, Swarovski, the manufacturer of 'highly collectable' cut glass tat has been forced by the OFT to stop influencing prices charged by its dealer network in the UK (this story also below).
