Window and Door Replacement Manufacturer Wins Award as Small Business Persons of the Year

Wolfgang Wirthgen and Gary Templin, CEO's of WinDor, manufacturer and installer of vinyl windows and doors, was recently honoured by the Southland Economic Development Corporation as Small Business Persons of the Year for 2003. The company, which has offices throughout Los Angeles, Orange and Riverside counties, received recognition based on commitment to quality and to the company's 195 employees.

With the announcement of the coveted award, on top of a 45-percent growth increase this year, WinDor's executive management has decided to purchase an additional 18,000 square foot building located directly adjacent to their existing 57,000 square foot manufacturing plant and showroom. This expansion will improve order efficiencies while also allowing WinDor to expand the company's ten-strong line-up of replacement products.

'We were honoured to give this award to WinDor's owners because they have a great mix of company and employee focus - with quality as their goal,' said Jim Davis, President of Southland Economic Development Corp. 'We looked at several deserving companies, but WinDor truly stood out as a company that looked for profitability, future growth and security for their employees. I hope to see more of WinDor as they continue to grow and are no longer eligible as a small business.'

WinDor's desire for strict quality control is the main reason it sells and installs
direct to the public. The company no longer sells via contractors or new home builders so that it can control the quality of the installation process and thereby offer buyers a lifetime guarantee. Hundreds of WinDor doors and windows are installed around the Southland each week. Several products are industry 'firsts' such as the invisible screen door that retracts within the slider, the colour treated vinyl windows (giving buyers a refreshing option from the only white offerings of the past) and each window and door includes WinDor's Low E energy saving glass.

'We were honoured to be awarded by the Southland Economic Corporation,' said co-owner Wolfgang Wirthgen. 'We have kept a tight-hold on how we do business and our focus on quality and customer service is a big part of why we continue to grow. This award is really directed at our employees (our extended family) who have been the strength of WinDor and who are responsible for our growth into the largest window/door manufacturing company in the Southland.'

Testing the Elite . .

Spectus Systems says that the New Elite 70 system has undergone testing at The National Physics Laboratory and has passing the required levels with flying colours.

Spectus claims that this level of achievement must be attributed to the system's revolutionary five-chambered design, which the company says has been proven to enhance the window's insulation performance.

Two samples of the system were tested using both 28mm Pilkington 'K' Glass/Air filled units and Pilkington Optitherm SN/Air filled units. The results for the Pilkington 'K' glass sample came out at 1.85 W/m2K, which is a significant pass result, exceeding the requirements of Document L. The same high level was again attained with the Pilkington Optitherm SN sample, which achieved 1.65 W/m2/K: more than adequate to meet the requirements of Document J, where a value of less than 1.8 W/m2/K is required.

Engineer Peter Jones is not surprised by the system's success: 'With these results we are confident that our systems can meet the current and future requirements of the Building Regulations for conservation of fuel and power. Elite 70 has been designed to provide the very best performance in a PVC window'.

Securistyle Locks in Another Top Award

Window and hardware manufacturer Securistyle, has won the Zenith 'supplier of the year' award for the third time, in the furniture and hardware category.

The award criteria considered quality of communication, delivery times, the number of rejects and the commitment to customer service, which are all areas Securistyle prides itself on performing well in. Receiving an award from such a key manufacturer in the domestic replacement windows and doors market serves as a fine endorsement for Securistyle.

Nigel Thompson, sales and marketing director at Securistyle says, 'Receiving an award like this gives us validation that we are getting it right with our customer service. With or without awards, we are always striving to give our customers the best possible service and highest quality products, but it is always nice to receive a pat on the back.'

Frank Grey, manufacturing services director at Zenith says, 'The purpose of the award is to recognise and commend those suppliers who we feel have given us outstanding service throughout the year. The fact that Securistyle has won its category three times, shows that not only has the company made an impression on us this year but that its commitment to service and excellence is continuous.'

Force 8 gets Thumbs-Up from FENSA

Stockport-based PVCu window and door specialist, Force 8 received the thumbs-up after a recent inspection by the British Board of Agrèment (BBA) at a private residence in Poynton, under the glazing industry’s self-regulatory FENSA scheme. Designed to provide registered companies with a means of demonstrating their commitment to complying with new Approved Documents of the Building regulations including installation quality, energy efficiency and workmanship, FENSA stands as an independent self-certification scheme, monitoring and helping to maintain industry standards.

FENSA inspector Peter Maddern (right) approves the Force 8 domestic window replacement installation

Commenting on the Force 8 installation in Poynton, BBA inspector Peter Maddern said: ‘Our job is to assist the local authorities in ensuring improved standards of energy efficiency in line with the new Building Regulations. Companies registered under FENSA provide unrestricted access to all installations and we in turn check for all sorts of things, including the quality and strength of the glass, appropriate access and egress, etc. We then inform FENSA and it issues the homeowner with the appropriate certificate, as well as notifying the local authority. I am delighted to see companies such as Force 8 backing the scheme – an astounding success throughout the country.’

Dennis Sumner, managing director of Force 8, welcomes the FENSA initiative: ‘Any bona fide company which takes a pride in the quality of its installations has nothing to fear and indeed should welcome the scheme. We are delighted to have this opportunity for an independent appraisal and assessment of the quality of our products and services and would advise all homeowners to think seriously about the prospects of selling their homes in the future.

‘Without these certificates of compliance, it could prove a very expensive business – and we would recommend that members of the public thinking about replacement windows and doors specifically look for a FENSA registered company to do the job.’

Force 8 is a family-owned and operated business which manufactures and supplies windows, doors and conservatories to thousands of installers and fabricators all over Europe. Its product portfolio includes a range of design variations to meet all requirements, including arched and unusually shaped styles.

Portal is First to Achieve New Standard

Portal Products, UK door panel manufacturer, has achieved BPF 355/1 accreditation for its PVCu panels. The company believes itself to be the first in the UK to hold this revised standard.

Explains Portal’s Managing Director, Peter Shears: 'If a company has Kitemark accreditation, then it must use panels to the BPF criteria. The BPF saw a need to revise the original 1994 specification and bring it more in line with current products; we worked closely with BSI in developing the testing required to measure compliance.'

The BPF 355/1 accreditation applies to solid, white unglazed infill panels and required them to undergo stringent impact, abrasion and fire resistance tests.
Peter adds: 'As some of our customers hold Kitemarks, we felt it was important to achieve the new standard ourselves. It also reinforces the quality inherent in all our products and instils greater confidence in the performance of our panels.'

Benedictus Winners Congratulated in Finland

Jeff Granato, worldwide director of architectural glass for Glass Laminating Products congratulated the winner of the 2003 DuPont Benedictus Awards® for innovation and excellence in architectural laminated glass, Professor Koichi Yasuda JAI of the Tokyo Institute of Technology and architectural firm Nikken Sekkei, Tokyo, designer of the Pola Museum of Art in Hakone-Machi, Japan.

Professor Yasuda used laminated glass for 'the light spine of the museum' - a skylight that combines structural strength and refined detailing to shower natural daylight onto the five floors underneath while helping to achieve a symbiosis between the museum and its natural surroundings in the lush Hakone-Machi forest. These photos were taken at an international press conference where the winners of the 2003 DuPont Benedictus Awards® were congratulated, held on 15th June 2003 in Tampere, Finland.

Go-For Gold . .

North Shields-based Spectus fabricator Gofor Trade Windows has already been awarded BS:7412 acceditation, cementing the first five-years' development of a business dedicated to high standards of quality and service.

Gofor Trade Windows employed a consultant, recommended by Spectus, to help mould the BS to the company's needs.

Company Secretary Jo Rutter is ecstatic about the company's development:
'We have been using the BS guidelines since we started trading, so did not find the accreditation process too difficult. We have always prided ourselves on our excellent personal service and the high quality Spectus products that we supply: the accreditation now substantiates this at an official level.

'As a small family-run business comprising of 14 full-time and one part-time staff members, we have worked hard to grow the business and are achieving great success, with our windows being used in installations as large as the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle-upon-Tyne.'

The BSI accreditation has spurred Gofor on to go for even greater heights: 'Over the next few years we plan to continue with our ongoing strategy of steady progression. We recently opened a showroom showing the wide range of products that we manufacture, and hope to soon move to new improved premises. We are setting and attaining new targets each year, and hope to see the business flourish.'

Brian Holden Wins Major Transport Qualification

Group Transport Manager for Leyland operations, Brian Holden, has recently been awarded one of the transport industry’s highest qualifications, the Certificate of Professional Competence or CPC. Planet now has the advantage of having an individual member of staff who can hold a Fleet Operators Licence in addition to the existing corporate qualification.

Brian’s recently completed year long study programme combined evening classes with a two week residential course based at the Warrington offices of the Transport Training Service.

The Oxford and Cambridge certificated course consists of intensive and wide ranging modules covering every aspect of the industry and associated legal requirements.

Brian has a thirty year career in fleet management and is a fully trained car and commercial vehicle mechanic. But even with this background, Brian found the course challenging.

'There are literally hundreds of regulations to obey, ranging from the way vehicles are loaded, their mechanical condition and the hours and speeds at which they are driven. There are also rules about health and safety, discrimination, even taxation.

'In addition the course covered issues such as vehicle selection, route planning and the most effective methods of organising preventive maintenance. Fines are imposed for breaking many of these rules and in some circumstances the licence can even be revoked! – not very good when nationwide delivery schedules have to be met', says Brian.

Today the Planet Leyland fleet consists of nearly one hundred vehicles ranging from articulated tractor units, 7.5 tonne vans, concrete mixers, tipper trucks and cars.

They cover an annual distance of around 1.6 million miles and if every vehicle had to have a replacement set of tyres fitted, the bill would be nearly £40,000! Awareness of this sort of information has enabled Brian to negotiate very favourable five figure discounts with a major tyre supplier.

Brian is also responsible for keeping Planet up to date with the implications of planned legislation that could effect the group's operational efficiency and profitability, such as the new laws on driving hours currently under discussion for introduction in 2004.

BBA is the most prestigious standard for construction throughout the UK, and is only presented once stringent testing has been carried out to ensure that the very highest standards of performance are continuously met.

John Quinn, Operations Manager of Quality Roofing Systems, was presented with the BBA certificate at Glassex 2003, by Bob Keyes, Area Business Manager for BBA.

Window Ware Recognised for Outstanding Commercial Performance

Window Ware, a supplier of hardware components to the fenestration industry, has recently been awarded the Heywood Williams Group Company of the Year Award for outstanding commercial performance in the year 2002.

After a move to significantly larger premises in Bedford twelve months ago, sales have grown dramatically. The extra space has allowed for additional product ranges and increased stock levels to cater for the inconsistent ordering patterns of the industry.

With so few tangible differences both in unique selling points and in price differentials in this sector of the market place, the quality of the service to the customer is crucial. Window Ware has made this a priority and its customers have responded by placing additional business with them.

Window Ware was also given credit for the warehouse initiatives they had introduced which have led to increased efficiencies, helping to off-set the effects of margin erosion and for the company's Health & Safety record - another of the criteria for winning the award.

Managing Director, Simon Dickenson, was delighted to accept the award from the Chairman of Heywood Williams Group, Hamish Bryce.

'At Window Ware we take Health & Safety issues very seriously and this adds to the morale of all those who work at the company. Our success can be directly attributed to our focus on servicing our customers to the best of our ability and never being complacent. Everyone who works here knows that, essentially, we are in a service industry'.

Four Projects Featuring Technal's Glazing Systems Win Civic Trust Awards 2003

Four high profile projects featuring architectural aluminium glazing systems from Leeds-based Technal, have received Civic Trust Awards 2003.

The awards recognise excellence in contemporary architecture and are part of the Civic Trust's campaign for better buildings and places. The winning schemes, which were selected by the judges from 525 entries, will be used to demonstrate what can be achieved through good design.

Martin Bacon, Chief Executive of the Civic Trust said, 'Three themes have emerged during the judging process: the importance of sustainability; the need to take more care when making buildings accessible; and the importance of creating buildings that work well in their context. Across the country, architects, their clients and planners are collaborating to produce buildings of a quality that far exceeds that which was being achieved 10 years ago.'

He added, 'All of the Civic Trust Award winners hold lessons about how to achieve outstanding buildings and places.'

Designed by Bennetts Associates for Scotland's first National Park, the Gateway and Orientation Centre is located in a spectacular setting on the shores of Loch Lomond. This rectangular pavilion has full height glazing to each elevation formed from Technal's MC Trame curtain wall. The simplicity of this system echoes the scheme's restrained design and has created a transparency, which integrates the building into the landscape and maximises the scenic views.

The new drama studios at Hampshire County Council's Brune Park Community School have also won a Civic Trust Award. This circular building, which again features curtain walling from Technal's MC suite, has a creative yet functional design, using copper roofing and yellow brick to complement the existing school. The scheme was described by the judges as 'beautifully detailed and weathering well'.

Bournemouth's new Central Library (pictured) received a Civic Trust Award Commendation. Designed by architects BDP, this is a fully accessible facility, which is a vital element in the regeneration of the city. The glazed exterior was formed using large spans of Technal's specially adapted MC curtain walling. According to the judges, this maximises daylight and helps to create an atmosphere of informality, inviting people into the building. As a measure of its success, the library has recently seen its visitor figures increase almost threefold.

The Sixth Avenue Apartments also received an Award Commendation. Designed by Cartwright Pickard Architects and built off-site by Yorkon, these affordable apartments are located on a brownfield site in York. Here, the use of steel-framed modular building enabled the project for Yorkshire Housing to be delivered in just 14 months. The contemporary design has low maintenance terracotta and timber cladding for visual appeal.

The Sixth Avenue scheme features Technal's FXi46 casement windows and is the first UK application of their new GXi sliding balcony door, which was used to allow access from each apartment on to a generous timber-decked balcony or private garden.

BPF Export Work Receives Highest Accolade from Government Body

The British Plastics Federation (BPF) has been awarded the highest rating as a UK group sponsor for overseas exhibitions and missions by Trade Partners UK (TPUK). TPUK confirmed this week that the BPF had been successful in the SESA (Support for Exhibitions and Seminars Abroad) accreditation process achieving a 'Green' rating: an honour only given to 20% of the total sponsors accredited.

'The BPF is extremely pleased to have been accredited as a sponsor by Trade Partners UK.' commented BPF Director General Peter Davis 'To achieve a green rating indicates that the hard work we put into our Trade Development programme has been recognised. We have always considered the encouragement of exports as a crucial part of our service to the plastics industry.'

The TPUK SESA programme aims to offer support to UK companies wishing to develop their export potential and includes a financial contribution towards exhibiting costs, and access to and advice on specific markets. As a sponsor, the BPF offers support to exporters throughout the whole process including complete onsite assistance at the event.

The BPF Trade Development Team, which has a strong reputation for taking UK Groups to overseas exhibitions, is now eligible to bid for events for the next three years, after which a formal re-accreditation process will take place. The team has always received positive feedback from the government body and comments from a past audit stated: 'I am pleased to advise you that the feedback received from those companies interviewed was very positive both in terms of the success of the event and the support provided by you. Feedback from colleagues at the Embassy was also very positive.'

The BPF has led British Groups to exhibitions and seminars worldwide for over 50 years visiting countries including France, India, China, the US and Germany, including attending the first ever Kunstoffe fair.

'With this new accreditation the BPF can continue to encourage exports through its exciting events programme' concluded Davis, 'The branding we provide at international exhibitions consolidates the British presence signposting the strengths of our industry.'
