Spectus Helps Solaglas to Secure BSI Accreditation

As a result of working closely with its systems supplier, Spectus Systems, Solaglas Ltd of Eastbourne has been awarded BS7950 for the company's Sightline 70 profile suites.

BS7950 is the British Standard specification for enhanced security performance of casement and tilt/turn windows in domestic applications and is an important part of the police force's crime prevention initiative 'Secured by Design.'

Anne Boyd of BSI presents the accreditation to Andy Skinner, Contracts Manager and Martin Sims, Business Manager of Solaglas Ltd

To achieve the standard, windows are put through rigorous security tests, which are all designed to test the window's resistance to various levels of forced entry and its ability to withstand impact & mechanical manipulation.

'BS7950 is now becoming a required standard for many specifiers, especially in the new build, local authority and private housing markets,' explains Martin Sims, Business Manager at Solaglas.

'As a company which specialises in social and private housing it is obviously vital for us to ensure that we can comply with this important standard. Not only do we now have the benefit of being able to guarantee enhanced security, BS7950 also gives us a competitve edge over other companies operating in these sectors.'

Mike Martin Windows Wins Top Conservatory Award

Mike Martin Windows of St Austell, Cornwall has secured a top award in an annual competition to showcase the best designed and installed conservatories in the UK.

The company won the competition, Sponsored by Ultraframe, the international designer and manufacturer of conservatory systems, in the New Build category for its work installing a conservatory onto a bungalow in Holywell Bay near Newquay, Cornwall.

This annual competition receives hundred of entries every year and despite fierce competition Mike Martin Window Systems impressed all the judges.

The winning conservatory design consists of a small roof with valleys and a gable, which blends seamlessly with the main property and looks as if it had been part of the original design rather than an afterthought.

The company began trading in 1986 manufacturing joinery and carrying out maintenance work. However, by 1988 the company began to focus on PVCu and in 1994 changed the trading name to Mike Martin Window Systems to reflect the change in the company's business.

Since the beginning, Mike Martin Window Systems has won work on the basis of recommendations and the company now works closely with a number of high quality developers. It has also built up a healthy supply only trade with other window and conservatory installers. Annual turnover last year was almost £452,000 and the company hopes that its award will help to drive business in 2003.

Peter Allen, Sales Director, Ultraframe (UK) Ltd, said: 'The success of this company is a clear indication that innovative and quality work will always shine through'.

Complete Accredited Conservatories from Shepley

Shepley, the trade fabricators of PVCu frames, has been awarded BBA approval for the manufacture of conservatory roofs. Coupled with the fact that Shepley's PVCu windows have already achieved BS 7412, the company can now offer customers an accredited complete conservatory from one supplier.

BBA approval is recognised throughout the window industry as sign of commitment to the highest levels of quality and is the only credible standard relating to conservatory roofs. As you'd expect the tests are thorough and checks are made on all aspects of production. Roofs are tested for wind and weathertightness, as well as the effects of solar gain and UV light on the system as a whole. Ventilation is also investigated, as is condensation risk and thermal insulation. Structural calculations are checked with the effects of snow loads forming part of this assessment.

Alan Thomas of the BBA commented, 'We inspect the production facility at the fabricator's premises to see that the fabricator is making roofs to the specification we have approved. This is a detailed process and involves a thorough check on all aspects of the fabrication procedure from order, through the various stages of production, to the finished roof. Only if we are completely satisfied will a BBA Certificate be awarded. Shepley came up trumps when we assessed its manufacturing procedures and we were delighted to award BBA Certificate 03/3984 to Gary Torr, Shepley's managing director, at the company's customer conference in January this year.

'BBA approval means a lot to the companies and homeowners who buy conservatory roofs. They can buy safe in the knowledge that these products have been thoroughly checked out by the BBA - an organisation partnered with Government, with no commercial axe to grind that has developed unparalleled expertise in the area of windows and conservatory roof evaluation.'

BSI Testing Confirms CWG Residential Doors Meet the Requirements of PAS 23 and 24 Standards

The BSI has accredited residential doors by the Corby Windows Group to PAS 23 weather performance and PAS 24 security. The doors, manufactured using Rehau's Tritec 60mm and 706, 70mm profile systems, have undergone the severe punishment exacted by the test schedules and passed.

The doors included the new XL3 Scorpion lock announced by CWG before Glassex and launched at the show. It has three steel hooks two of which move in opposite directions. The third is centrally positioned and produced from hardened, triple laminated steel, which provides resistance to forced entry now confirmed by the test results.

No other locking or security systems were included in the door construction and the company's standard flag hinges were used.

The positioning of the new lock's compression cams assisted the successful completion of the weather performance tests. They are now nearer the top and bottom of the frame providing improved sealing capability over a greater range of door heights.

PAS 23 and 24 certification of CWG residential doors, fabricated using Rehau profiles, introduces an important security and performance sales advantage for the company's installer customers. The new Scorpion lock will be fitted as standard in future across the company's door range. This accompanies a wide selection of casement windows produced by CWG using Rehau's Tritec and 702, 60mm systems and the 706, 70mm system, all with accreditation to the BS 7950 high security standard.

BWF Member Listed as Centre of Expertise in Government Scheme

ACWI, the specialist consultancy to the timber, joinery and furniture sectors, and an Associate Member of the British Woodworking Federation (BWF), has been listed as a Centre of Expertise in Manufacturing under the DTI's Manufacturing Advisory Service.

The service is to be run in partnership with the Regional Development Agencies in England and the Welsh Development Agency, with the focus primarily on small to medium size companies. The advice available covers all aspects of production management, technology, quality and systems.

Commenting on this, ACWl's managing director, Stuart Vincent, said: 'I am delighted our unique blend of skills and experience has been recognised in this way. We look forward to becoming an active member of this network.'

During its six years of membership of the BWF, ACWl has worked with a number of members. Its main role has been as manager of a variety of projects that have led to members' success in achieving ISO 9002 accreditation, creating improved CRM systems based on improved response times and reorganising internal and external structures to benefit both administration and manufacturing processes.

During the last year three members have been guided towards achieving the required standards to successfully achieve accreditation for membership of the BWF-CERTIFIRE Fire Door & Doorset Scheme.

'This is exactly what Associate Membership is all about,' said Richard Lambert, the BWF's Director. 'lt enables us to bring companies who supply our main manufacturing members, whether with components or services, into our community. We've seen several suppliers join specifically to develop their business with our Members.

'The BWF's primary role is to help its Members maximise their sales and profitability. We provide a range of business-related services to our Members, but we can also put them in touch with other Members who can help in areas where we don't have the expertise. ACWl is in an excellent position because that's where its skills lie. This kind of cross-fertilisation is exactly what makes BWF membership so valuable.

BBA Approval for GU Window Guardian

GU/Ferco's Window Guardian high security shootbolt has gained BBA certification - adding to its Sold Secure and BS7950 approval.

This shootbolt claims to offer simpler, faster fitting and assembly to fabricators. With casement shootbolts and espagnolettes that suit the same routing detail and keepers, the system is quick and simple to install. It also combines shoot and mushroom keeper in one corner casing that strengthens a vulnerable frame area and brings simplified stockholding and faster assembly for fabricators.

'The fact that Window Guardian has gained BBA certification is further proof of the security and effectiveness of our window bolt range. It also reflects GU Ferco's commitment to set the standards in the hardware industry with a high quality range of products,'says lan Ward, Sales & Marketing Manager of GU Ferco.

Window Guardian is suitable for both PVCu and timber and available with 20 mm and 22 mm backsets and 7.7 mm and 9 mm mushroom cams to suit standard full depth or half depth eurogroove fitting.

Profile-related keepers are available for most profiles and have a design that combines the shoot and mushroom keeper in a one-piece casting. The keeper design is angled at 90° to self-locate in the profile corner and increase the strength of this vulnerable area. Three fixing screws set well back to pick up on the reinforcing, locate the keeper in the horizontal and vertical planes to add extra strength to the corner weld and allow a night vent position.

Standard design mushroom keepers are available for the intermediate locking points, which have a two-screw fixing that enables the rearmost screw to fasten into the reinforcing. The same mushroom keepers also accomodate the in-line casement espagnolette for ease of stocking.

Both the steel shoot and sash compression mushroom cams are adjustable by means of a 4-mm Allen key and provide a 13-mm adjustable shoot throw. They are available in sizes ranging from 350 mm-1400 mm. For faster fitting the range has pre-set extensions with an extension overlap on popular sizes for greater flexibility. In addition, the gearbox is only 7 mm deeper than the backset to fit slim profiles and features an industry standard routing preparation for ease of fitting.

Door System Adds New Dimension to Fire Safety

The Wright Style Ltd door system, tested at the Warrington Fire Research Centre, has achieved an integrity fire resistant rating of three and a half hours.

Wright Style Ltd, based in Devizes, Wiltshire, provides its intemational customers with a range of steel fire resistant and security gIazing systems, from curtain walling and roof glazing to internal and external screens, doors and windows.

The tested fire resistant door system, that meets BS476 part 22, is now available world-wide through Wright Style's network of licensed fabricators.

The system, which is also suitable for high-security applications, incorporated a pair of single action rebated doors, with overall dimensions of 1900mm wide by 2200mm high.

The doors were glazed with three square metres of 5mm Firelite glass, supplied by Southern Ceramics Ltd, and incorporated Dorma floor springs and overhead door selector.

The welded door system was glazed using hidden fixing snap-over beads, making the system aesthetically pleasing and easy to maintain. The doors also incorporate a self-activating four point locking system.

The test target was to achieve two hours of fire resistance, - a significant level of fire safety - but the system outperformed that target by a further 90 minutes, giving three and a half hours or 210 minutes in total.

'Wright Style Ltd is committed to the development of safe and competitively-priced products to meet and exceed all international fire and security regulations. That commitment to remain at the forefront ofinternational development means that we continue to push the design envelope,' said Denis Wright, Managing Director.

The system is also performance tested for water penetration in window applications and can be provided in a range of steel profile dimensions, giving variable sight lines and furniture options. Profiles are available from stock either in self-colour or pregalvanised as standard.

Wright Style Ltd offers a range of steel based glazing systems and fire resistant glass. In the past few months Wright Style Ltd has announced a number of new product developments, including:
• The new large span four-sided structurally glazed SG curtain walling system,
a development of the existing SR steel and stainless steel systems.
• The new SGP curtain walling system, with its design of sealed unit retention and performance protection.
• The T series curtain walling system, that allows the designer greater flexibility
over conventional facade systems.
• The first dry gasket glazed curtain walling system to achieve 120/120 fire resistance for integrity and insulation.
