Modplan achieves 'Sold Secure' Status for Doors

Modplan Ltd has now achieved 'Sold Secure' approved fabricator status for its range of door styles.

'We chose the 'Sold Secure' Scheme because of its close ties with constabularies and insurers', explains trade sales manager Chris Reeks. 'Testing is equivalent to that for PAS024, or Secured By Design, but the human intervention tests are far more realistic than other approved security schemes, as they apply methods more commonly used by real burglars, rather than a set application of tools and time permitted - that's the beauty of the close liaison between Sold Secure and the police force.'

The Sold Secure approved list is sent to every force in the country and because the association is totally independent and non profit making, it is able to dedicate its time and resources into reducing the risk of theft.

'For Modplan the benefits to customers are enormous, with many insurance companies and brokers offering discounts on Sold Secure approved products. There is also a wide range of promotional coverage and a comprehensive support package for those installers who wish to become approved themselves,' continues Chris.

'The lock used on Modplan doors is, as you would expect, robust and reliable, but it is also easy to install, with a range of progressive security options and hook locks providing an anti lift effect.

'We are always looking at ways to improve our products and find added value for our customers and this door lock will certainly do that!' concludes Chris.

Veka Sets new Standards with new Quality and Environmental Awards

Systems extruder Veka plc has been presented with certificates for two key standards for quality and environmental management.

Following a tour of the Palace of Westminster conducted by the company's local MP for Burnley Peter Pike, members of Veka's management team were presented with certificates for the latest version of quality management standard BS EN ISO 9001: 2000, and BS EN ISO 14001, which confirms the company's commitment to sound environmental practices.

The new BS EN ISO 9001: 2000 achieved by Veka requires a greater emphasis on Customer Focus, ongoing assessment of Customer Satisfaction and the implementation of Continual lmprovement Activities. Although Veka has always maintained robust systems to ensure that quality is at the forefront of the company's activities, a substantial review of all processes and related procedures within Veka was undertaken to ensure conformance to the new requirements specified within the new standard.

It has long been recognised by Veka that a responsible attitude to the environment was becoming a key factor for Veka, its customers and consumers. Indeed, in Germany Veka operates Europe's first PVCu window recycling plant, which was recently visited by the British Plastics Federation Window Group as part of its policy development process.

The award of BS EN ISO 14001 follows the creation within Veka of an Environmental Steering group that established a number of key objectives, including action to be taken in respect of Sustainable Development, Energy Consumption and overall Waste. Also included within this assessment was a review of all applicable legislation and the company's conformance to this and any other regulatory requirements.

Restaurant with Conical Curved Glass Feature by Pro-Glass Wins Awards for Design Excellence

When the now well known and award-winning Putney Bridge Restaurant was in its design stage, PKS Architects wanted the building to resemble the bow of a ship.
They turned to Pro-Glass by Darby, a division of Darby Glass, to produce the inverted conical curved glass shape which now dominates this visually commanding building on the embankment of the Thames

'When we had the concept for the 'nose cone' glazing at Putney Bridge, we had our doubts whether anyone in the UK could provide it,' says Charles Sands of PKS Architects.

'We were pleased to find that Darby Glass could deliver and hope that other architects will take advantage of this capability to let their imaginations go.'
The three-storey 8,760 sq ft Putney Bridge Restaurant, which also features an attractive mono-pitch copper roof, has won a number of prestigious awards for design excellence.

These include:
* RIBA Award
* American Institute of Architects 'excellence in design' commendation
* Copper Development Association's John Smith Award for Craftsmanship

'We believe there is no better example than Putney Bridge Restaurant of the stunning effect that conical toughened curved glass can bring to architecture,' says Angela Cann-Sagoe, Sales & Marketing Director of Pro-Glass by Darby.

Technal's Facade system picks up Two Awards for Belfast Project

Todd Architects' city centre Whitehall Square development in Belfast has won two major architectural awards - the Laganside Award for Regeneration 2002 from the Royal Society of Ulster Architects, and a RIBA Award 2002.

Developed by the Carvill Group, this landmark mixed scheme of apartments and retail units features extensive use of aluminium glazing systems from Technal, including around 500 windows and balcony doors from its recently launched and fully integrated FXi suite.

The development was described as 'a modern interpretation of the traditional perimeter block.....designed to promote urban renaissance'. It provides 121 one, two and three-bedroom apartments across four and five floors, in addition to 8,000sqft of retail space for five units at ground floor level. Many of the apartments are dual aspect, looking out towards the city and offering peaceful views over the feature landscaped inner courtyard.

The varying roof line is created from two-storey roof penthouses and three-storey pavilions which enclose the courtyard on four sides. This design forms a natural sun trap and ensures the development complements the roof lines on its external boundaries.

Fabricated and installed by Saint-Gobain Solaglas, Belfast, a range of systems from Technal were used at Whitehall Square. Double height sloped MC curtain walling to the living rooms of the penthouse apartments allows views over the courtyard. The system also encloses the impressive atrium at the corner entrance.

Glazed in clear toughened glass, dual colour windows and balcony doors from Technal's FXi52 range were finished in a low maintenance dark blue polyester powder coating externally to contrast with the white rendering and brick cladding, and white internally complementing the stylish interiors and solid maple wood floors throughout. The systems incorporate elegantly curved profiles for a more contemporary appearance, and an efficient 15mm flush polyamide break for superior thermal performance.

Fully tested to British and international standards, the FXi52 range has a number of security features such as internal glazing and multi-point espagnolette locking. The system can be supplied in a range of configurations to suit most applications, including fixed lights, top and side hung, bottom hung, tilt-turn and balcony doors.

The latest addition to the FXi suite is a new 65mm module window designed to give specifiers more choice and flexibility to meet the requirements of the new Building Regulations.

Evergreen Door achieves fire and security ratings

Evergreen Door has achieved PAS 23 and PAS 24 accreditations on all its steel and fibreglass entrance door systems, plus a 30-minute fire rating on its manufactured steel-faced door, following extensive testing by independent experts.

The required tests were carried out by Chiltern, a UKAS testing house, on selected doors from Evergreen's range. Achievement of the accreditation has now opened up new market opportunities for the Yorkshire-based company.

Managing Director, Robert Benn, comments: 'Achieving these quality standards enables us to pursue new opportunities, particularly in the commercial and Local Authority specification sectors.

'We are believed to be the only steel-faced door manufacturer in the UK supplying to fabricators who can manufacture to Evergreen's high quality and security standards.'

Fire tests were carried out on a glazed steel-faced cottage door complete with a solid FSC timber core, letterplate and spyhole. The door resisted fierce burning for 46 minutes to achieve the required rating.

All Evergreen doors are now available with the Profile 22 three-chambered composite door frame which provides greater thermal insulation to meet the energy efficiency requirements of Document L of the Building Regulations.

The new frame is easy to install and features a flatter, squarer profile for flusher-fitting hinges and a robust, secure fit. Using a 3mm frame profile brings greater rigidity and all door profile styles now match window profile shades.

Evergreen thresholds are designed for easy installation with no mitring required and concealed screw fittings for a neater finish. All thresholds are Part M compliant, offer superior weatherability, and allow for inward or outward-opening doors.

Evergreen Door is aiming to achieve the ISO 9001:2000 quality standard later this year.

Window of Opportunity for Processors

Staff at Pilkington Glass, glass merchants and processors, are polishing up their skills with the help of the North East Chamber of Commerce.

Through the Chamber's Sunderland Training Centre, 18 staff at the company's Middlesborough site are working towards the GQA NVQ level 2 qualification in glass processing.

The one-year programme helps candidates develop key skills and includes manufacturing procedures, handling glass products, operating equipment, quality control and health and safety.

Optional units in cutting, etching, polishing, transporting and storing glass products can also be taken.

(left to right) Pilkington Glass employees Russell Smith, John Sneddon, Darren Tate, John Ramsey, Jan Lindberg and Dave Blackhew who are working towards an NVQ in glass processing with the North East Chamber of Commerce.

Works supervisor at Pilkington Glass, Darren Tate, is one of those to benefit from the programme. He said 'Although I've worked here for a few years, the experience has been very beneficial. It has helped me refresh existing skills as well as gain valuable tips on best practice and health and safety issues.

'It is a widely recognised qualification and I'm looking forward to completing my NVQ to get formal recognition for my skills.'

Pilkington Glass, which has its head office in St. Helen's, specialises in the manufacture of insulated glass units and has branches in the North East at Middlesbrough and Team Valley.

Works manager at the Middlesbrough office, Gary Dobson, is delighted with the programme. He explained 'We are always looking for our staff to develop and improve their skills and this is an ideal way for them to do this, particularly as they can learn while they work.

'Many of our staff are multi-skilled but don't have the formal qualifications to match. Through the NVQ programme they can boost their confidence and gain a widely recognised qualification.'

Training Advisors from the Sunderland training centre continually assess employees throughout the programme, enabling them to complete the training during normal working hours.

Manager of the Sunderland training centre, Pauline Palmer, explained 'The programme works to help staff develop and improve their skills through training exercises, practice and continual assessment.

'The programme is designed to meet the needs of individual candidates, from trainees to more experienced employees. Staff at Pilkington Glass have approached the programme enthusiastically and are making good progress towards achieving the qualification.'

Deceuninck Wins PP Award 2002

On 23rd October Jean-Vasco Degryse, prevention advisor and environment coordinator of Deceuninck, received the PP (Pollution Prevention) Award 2002 from Ms. Vera Dua, Minister of the Government of Flanders for Environment and Agriculture. This award crowns the most deserving pollution prevention project of the past two years and was presented during the Ifest 2002 fair in Flanders Expo.

To participate in the competition, several conditions had to be fulfilled. The project had to show the efforts made to tackle the waste flows and emissions at the source, offer an economic advantage, have an innovative character and be realised after January 1 2000. Out of 12 applications, six companies were nominated and Deceuninck was granted the award.

Deceuninck has won the award thanks to its project that dramatically reduces the use of solvents. Solvents are used, among others, in solvent glues to stick foils onto the PVCu profiles. By switching to solvent free hotmelt glues 47% fewer solvents have been used in the past two years. This corresponds to a reduction of 24.4 tonnes per year.

Currently Deceuninck is working hard to completely eliminate its use of solvents. ‘This award is about more than a pat on the back for Deceuninck. It is without any doubt the confirmation that we have chosen the right environmental strategy’, said CEO Clement De Meersman.

The PP story cannot be seen as a stand-alone project. It is a part of the sustainable development policy whereby Deceuninck is not only taking care of its personnel, but also of quality, safety and environment.

The Deceuninck Groupspecialises in compounding, design, development, extrusion, finishing and recycling of PVCu systems and profiles for the building industry. The company is active in 32 countries, has 20 subsidiaries (production and/or sales) and is supported by 1694 personnel, with 540 in Hooglede-Gits. Deceuninck achieved consolidated sales of 350.6 million EUR in 2001.

Piper Double Glazing Recognised as a Fastest Growth Small Businesses

Window and door fabricator/installer Piper Double Glazing Ltd, Ramsgate, Kent, has received an honourable mention among the fastest growth businesses in inner city Britain at the second annual Inner City 100, the small business awards dubbed 'the Enterprise Oscars' by Chancellor Gordon Brown.

Neville Piper, Chairman of Piper Double Glazing received the Inner City 100 2002 Winners Award for the South East Area’s fastest growing business (Pictured: L to R. Rashid Bashir, Rt Hon Patricia Hewitt, and
Neville Piper). The award was sponsored by the South East of England Development Agency (SEEDA) and presented by Rashid Bashir of SEEDA and Rt Hon Patricia Hewitt, Secretary of State for Industry.

A project of the New Economics Foundation (NEF), a leading think-tank on neighbourhood renewal, the Inner City 100 is the only index of the fastest growing businesses in Britain’s most deprived inner city areas. The inaugural Inner City 100 marked a turning point in understanding the economic potential in the UK’s distressed urban areas, revealing how entrepreneurs and their often local workforces are leading the regeneration of Britain’s inner cities.

'The 2002 Inner City 100 Index is more robust and high profile, with wider geographical coverage, more nominations, faster growing companies, tougher competition and more detailed research,' said Ed Mayo, executive director of the New Economics Foundation.

'In addition, this year we have drawn on NEF’s renowned methods of impact analysis to measure the community impact of inner city enterprises. Interestingly, the findings suggest that many of the fastest growth businesses on our Index offer the highest return for the local community. Inner city entrepreneurs provide the real role models we should be looking
for in terms of tomorrow’s business leadership.'

The companies defy stereotypes of unsophisticated inner city operations: their average five-year sales growth rate from 1997 to 2001 is 503 per cent up significantly from last year’s figure of 274 per cent and average annual revenues are £6.8 million up from £5 million. The inner-city workforce is benefiting, too.

Close to forty percent of Inner City 100 employees reside in the inner city. The Inner City 100 are responsible for creating close to 4,559 jobs and more than tripling their employment over the past five years. Fred Goodwin, Group Chief Executive of The Royal Bank of Scotland, the lead sponsor of the Inner City 100, said, 'The collective results of the companies making up last year’s Inner City 100 have been surpassed this year with higher levels of growth and job creation. The list again demonstrates that entrepreneurial spirit is alive and well in our inner cities and contributing significantly to regeneration of these communities.

However, the real challenge for the Inner City 100 has been to go beyond headline figures and understand why the businesses have been successful and learn more about what we can do to support their continued growth and replicate their success.'

RIBA Jury Praise Glass Block Staircases

Three external, glass-block walled, cylindrical staircase towers have been praised by the jury who bestowed RIBA's 2002 Regional Award on the new Pfizer Headquarters, at Walton Oaks in Surrey.

The headquarters, on a 38.7 acre parkland site in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, take the form ofa three-storey building with five 54-metres-long 'fingers' of office accommodation radiating from the central structure into a thin belt of mature trees.

The three staircases, which also serve as secondary and emergency access, are light-filled cylindrical towers. They stand like sentinels at the end of each 'finger' and were built on site by Luxcrete, with its 190 x 190 x 80mm clear glass blocks, sand-blasted for privacy.

The RIBA Award jury reported on the winning Pfizer building, 'The exterior is admirable in its precise and elegant detailing - the glazed staircase towers are a particularly enjoyable feature.'

Kitemark Success for Tremco and Jones Window Systems

Jones Window Systems of St. Helens has been awarded the Kitemark for IG units manufactured to BS 5713.

The quality award comes less than nine months after Jones Windows Systems decided to go into IG unit manufacturing, a decision made to avoid the late and short deliveries that the company had experienced with sub-contract suppliers.

Proprietor Frank Jones was determined not to let customers down, so he invested in new production equipment and chose Tremco as his partner.

Following this decision he got all the practical assistance necessary to quickly set up a high productivity IG unit manufacturing plant which almost immediateiy qualified for Kitemark certification.

Jones Window Systems is employing Tremco's HM 100 hot melt sealant system which is a single component product, requiring no mixing or cure time, so units can be handled immediately.

'Tremco HM 100 is smooth flowing, provides excellent adhesion to glass and aluminium, offers very low moisture vapour transmission and remains UV stable throughout a long service life.' says the company.

After just a few months in operation, Jones Window Systems is already growing out of the plant and is looking to re-locate to new premises with double the floorspace.

Network Veka Rewards Davids

Window fitter turned salesman David Hamilton has been honoured by Network Veka for gaining £1million of sales in record time. Just 18 months ago David was co-ordinating the installations department for Windsor-based Vectra Windows. Now, as a member ofthe company's sales team; he has rung in his first £1million and won a place in the history of the Network.

'David is only the eighth person from all across the UK to reach the 'Million Club' but he has also done it faster than any of the others,' said Network Veka southern area manager Peter Ward, who travelled to Vectra's showroom to present David with his special Million Club badge.

'That is quite an achievement, especially for someone so new to sales.' Network Veka began counting for the Million and Half Million Club in March 2000 when it brought the management of its deal registration and insurance-backed guarantees in-house.

David Hamilton may be blazing a trail but he might soon have a rival at Vectra - his colleague David Hillyard Jones was enrolled into Network Veka's Half Million Club at the same time and is catching up fast.
