GBW
Doors Pas the Test
GBW Discovery doors have passed the industry's most stringent testing
procedure relating to performance and security. PAS 23 / 24 approval has
been gained for all the entrance doors in the Discovery range following
an intensive six-month assessment programme.
The Columbus half-glazed door undertook the various tests conducted by
UKAS registered laboratories and passed with flying colours. In view of
this result for the most vulnerable design, all the other door styles
in the Discovery collection have automatically been approved to the same
standard.
PAS 23 covers a range of general performance criteria including weather
resistance and basic security whereby products are subjected to a 50,000
cycle test to assess the durability of the door leaf, frame, hinges and
locks. PAS 24 relates to enhanced security levels including hard/soft
body impact, mechanical load tests and the ability to withstand manual
attack.
Gaining PAS approval has opened up new market opportunities for GBW doors,
particularly within the public sector as most local authorities and housing
associations specify the two standards before awarding contracts. And
as a result of passing the tests, the company has also become a Secure
by Design licence holder.
Having undergone considerable growth in the past two years, GBW now has
an expanding customer base which includes a number of major national and
regional players.
'Achieving these prestigious performance standards reinforces our commitment
to provide a comprehensive range of doors that are proven to perform in
the field for the benefit of both our customers and the end-user,' comments
Geoff Foster, GBW's Director of Sales.

Nuglas
Scoops two National Conservatory Awards
Nuglas of Newhaven, East Sussex has won two top prizes in a competition
to find the best conservatories of 2002.
The
national competition, sponsored by the manufacturer and designer of conservatory
roof systems Ultraframe, showcases the most well designed and executed
conservatories both in the UK and around the world. Competition is intense:
this year the organisers received hundreds of entries and the judges had
a tough time deciding on the winners.
However, Nuglas triumphed, scooping awards for best conservatory in the
Commercial and New Build categories.
The winning conservatory in the Commercial category was designed and built
to enclose a swimming pool for a guesthouse in Eastbourne. The enclosure
enables the swimming pool to be used throughaut the year. Its design fits
with the overall architectural style of the property.
Peter Allen, Sales Director, Ultraframe (UK) Ltd, said: 'Despite a record
number of entries, the standard in this year's competition was extremely
high. Conservatories have never been more popular but it is good to see
that good design and quality engineering and craftsmanship are still winning
through. Ultraframe is therefore proud to honour Nuglas in two categories'.

HW
Plastics Recognised in lndustry Awards
HW Plastics was shortlisted in two categories of
this year's Plastics lndustry Awards. The company's overall quality was
recognised in its finalist position for Processor of the Year, and its
innovative work on the Window Quoter initiative led to a final three position
in the Best Sales and Marketing Initiative.
Window Quoter, developed jointly by HW Plastics and Price Engines Ltd,
allows potential customers to obtain an estimate for replacement windows,
doors and conservatories online. Only when the customer is happy with
the company, the product, the price and the promised service is the salesman
invited to survey and provide a final quote.
The initiative is already proving extremely popular with both customers
and fabricators who appreciate the value of the leads generated through
this forward-thinking process. Price Engines is currently generating about
£5,5m worth of quotes per week - a figure that is growing rapidly.
The Plastics lndustry Awards, presented before an audience of some 600
industry professionals on Friday, 17 May, are designed to 'celebrate achievement
throughout the entire scope of the UK plastics industry'.
Commenting on HW Plastics' creditable performance, the company said 'We
were delighted to have got so far in our first entry to this Awards programme
- and particularly delighted to have been commended for the development
of the Window Quoter initiative. We believe that this initiative is a
demonstration of the whole ethos of HW Plastics - that innovation is the
key to success, not only in terms of product design but in every area
of business.'

Pyroguard
Passes New European Standard (EN) Impact Safety Tests
The Euro-norm for impact testing of flat glass will soon be implemented
in most European Union countries (and elsewhere) superseding a montage
of different standards in current use.
In this new standard (prEN 12600) the impactor has a 50kg steel weight
core, enclosed by two pneumatic tyres, replacing the previously specified
45kg lead shot filled leather punch bag. Within the standard is a sophisticated
calibration procedure to ensure that the energy transferred to the test
piece is consistent and takes away the variability of impactor, test frame
rigidity and glass clamping.
Pyroguard 7.2mm Clear (EW30), 11.4mm Clear (EW60) and 7.2mm Wired (EW30)
have been successfully tested at the Wintech Test facility in Telford,
UK and all have attained classification level 2 (450mm drop height).
Certificate numbers TC 0111, TC 0112 and TC 0113 have confirmed these
results, which are the equivalent of the existing BS 6206 Impact tests
B class.

BSI
invests in new rig for glass impact testing
BSI Product Services has established a new test rig for Kitemarked glazing.
The customised £40,000 glass impact test rig has been commissioned
at BSI's test centre in Finway Road, Hemel Hempstead, England.
The new equipment automates the process of impact testing sheets of architectural
safety glass. Up to now, this testing has involved the manual lifting
of large pieces of glass which can weigh anything from 15kg to
75kg.
The new rig uses pneumatic suction to lift and swing sheets of glass efficiently
and safely. The sheets are impacted at the centre with leather impactor
bags filled with 45kg of lead shot. The impactors are swung from varying
specified heights onto sheets of glass that are approximately the size
of a standard door. The new rig is capable of testing up to 60 sheets
a day.
Commissioning the rig involved calibrating the machinery to within the
tolerances laid down in BS 6206 and BS EN 12600.
The
rig will continue to service the requirements of 95 Kitemark licensees
and a variety of other clients requiring product commission testing for
third party verification of their safety glazing products.
The picture to the left shows Tony Coley and Bob Glover of BSI Product
Services with the new glass impact test rig, shown here with the double
tyre type impactor weighing 50kg, for use on testing against BS EN 12600.
BSI provides a cost-effective testing and certification service for manufacturers
to demonstrate that their products are legal and fit for purpose.
