Sympathetic London housing refurbishment specification

Timber windows from one of the UK’s leading window manufacturers JELD-WEN have been specified for the sympathetic renovation of 150 properties in a designated conservation area in the London Borough of Haringey.

JELD-WEN’s Stormsure Casement and Vertical Sliding Sash windows were specified to meet a U value of 1.6 W/m2K to achieve current refurbishment guidelines under the Decent Homes programme.  All windows were supplied with JELD-WEN’s Hi Build factory finish in white, which enhances their appearance and prolongs their performance.

The project involves the sympathetic refurbishment of terraced properties that date back to the early 20th Century as part of a major upgrade to improve their energy efficiency. The project involved a like-for-like replacement of the windows, with the majority being timber double glazed sliding sash styles to retain the aesthetics of the street scene and complement neighbouring properties.

Pauline Hinds, Senior Project Manager at Homes for Haringey said: “Our residents are really pleased with the new timber double-glazed windows, which have drastically improved warmth and security of their homes, and also complement the special characteristics of the Tower Gardens Conservation area.”

Many of the windows supplied met the Association of Chief Police Officers’ Secured by Design standard for enhanced protection against intruder attack. In addition, wherever necessary, the casement windows supplied at first floor level were supplied as fire escape windows which provides enhanced safety for occupants.

JELD-WEN’s Stormsure Casement range includes a wide range of designs from standard casements to regency-style and tilt and turn windows.  All Stormsure windows have a thermal performance that meets current building regulations, down as low as 1.1W/m2K (whole product performance).

One of the most popular styles for refurbishments, JELD-WEN’s sliding sash windows feature stepped sashes for improved performance, yet retain traditional sight lines to complement a street scene.  Both sashes have the option of tilting inwards for easy cleaning and maintenance, which is very important in the social housing sector.
